Technology and Copyright in 1735: The Engraver's Act

Without printing technology there would be no need for copyright. Anglo-American copyright has its roots in early booksellers' practices that in 1710 were incorporated into the Statute of Anne. Several decades later in 1735 the provisions of this statute were copied in a new piece of legislation for the protection of engravings. However, “Hogarth's Act” protected only those engravings that involved original designs and thus, implicitly, made a distinction between artists and mere craftsmen. Soon, however, Parliament was persuaded to extend protection to all engravings. The history of Hogarth's Act foreshadowed the logic whereby a century later protection was extended first to special and then to ordinary photographs. Together these instances of copyright extension raise the question of to what degree similar patterns are at work in the continuing expansion of copyright today.

安东尼·吉登斯是当代著名的社会学理论大师之一,国内外学者主要关注他的结构化理论,而对他的自我认同理论关注较少.文章分析了<现代性与自我认同>一书的主要内容,总结出这本书所要表达的现代性条件下的自我认同是在反思性选择和反思性自恋机制作用下的一种建构过程,并总结出吉登斯自我认同理论具有的最重要的认识论价值就是,现代性条件下自我认同的方向首先是向内,然后才向外的,而传统社会里自我认同的方向则首先是向外,然后才向内的.而且,吉登斯的自我认同理论也带有理想化的色彩.     

Analogy in William Rowan Hamilton's New Algebra

This essay offers the first analysis of analogy in research-level mathematics, taking as its case the 1837 treatise of William Rowan Hamilton. Analogy spatialized Hamilton's key concepts—knowledge and time—in culturally familiar ways, creating an effective landscape for thinking about the new algebra. It also structurally aligned his theory with the real number system so his objects and operations would behave customarily, thus encompassing the old algebra while systematically bringing into existence the new.

The project method became a famous teaching method whenWilliam Heard Kilpatrick published his article ‘Project Method’ in 1918. The key idea in Kilpatrick’s project method is to try to explain how pupils learn things when they work in projects toward different common objects.The same idea of pupils learning by work or action in an environment with objects also belongs to John Dewey’s problem-solving method. Are Kilpatrick’s project method and Dewey’s problemsolving method the same thing? The aim of this article is to analyze and prove that Kilpatrick’s project method differs radically from Dewey’s problem-solving method.
