Cataloging for Consortial Collections: A Survey

ABSTRACT

Libraries face many challenges in making electronic resources accessible and discoverable. In particular, the exponentially incre-asing number of licensed and open access electronic resources and the dynamic nature of consortial collections (platform changes, title transference between packages, and package overlap) present challenges for cataloging and discovery. From March 21 to April 10, 2017, the authors performed a selected review of library literature and conducted a survey of library consortia worldwide to ascertain the cataloging models, strategies, and advanced technological tools used to ensure discovery of consortial collections. The findings from the literature review and survey are summarized in this article.     

From Vision to Action: One Campus's Experience with the UC CONSER Funnel

ABSTRACT

In 2006, the University of California launched a Cooperative Online Serials Program (CONSER) Funnel. It paved the way for serials catalogers across UC libraries to work with CONSER records in the OCLC WorldCat database. The first funnel dealing with bibliographic records in a decentralized approach in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's history, it has had significant impact locally and nationally. The UC Davis Library was one of the early participants. Valerie Bross was instrumental in its establishment and implementation. This article presents the view from a participating library's standpoint and complements Valerie's article which was published here in 2010.     

Commercialization of Technology News

While technology news has become a major news genre, the coverage of high-tech products has raised concerns regarding the commercialization of journalism. Drawing on salience transfer and exemplification theory, this study explores how The New York Times and USA Today covered Apple products along quantity and quality dimensions. A content analysis documented a landslide in the amount of coverage on Apple products in both newspapers. Both iPhones and iPads were disproportionately over-covered in relation to their market share. Over one-third of the headlines about the iPhone covered the product favorably. The New York Times published more stories about these gadgets than USA Today did, while USA Today was twice as likely to portray iPhones in a positive light. These findings have raised questions about the commercialization of technology news and its impact on journalism.     

企业文化不能回避的经济伦理

有的企业化建设回避企业经济道德问题。其实，企业等价交换、平等竞争活动是对特权的否定，是向社会和消费负责；企业强调经济效益、重视经济核算有利于社会，具有重要的社会效益；企业合法、合理地盈利主要靠创新，并为社会保障提供不断增长的可再生资源；一些企业提出的“双赢”、“多赢”目标，体现了社会主义市场经济中企业的道德风采。     

论当代主体性困境和出路

主体性是主体在实践中表现出来的自觉能动性。在科技水平高速发展的现代社会,由于实践能力的不断提高,忽略了对象的客体性维度,人的主体性处在前所未有的困境中。要走出这一主体性困境,必须呼唤社会实践中精神文化实践和伦理实践的审美性和道德性维度,在改造客观世界的同时改造主观世界,通过主体与特殊客体(主体)之间的沟通,达到人自身、人与自然、人与人关系的和谐。     

中道伦理观中西异同述论

中国和西方的中道思想是人类认识史上中国人和西方人殊途同轨的思想结晶。中国与西方对中道思想内涵均有各自的界定和阐述;中西中道观的共同点在于建构中道理论的目的、标明其伦理意义上,并成为构建和谐社会的思想工具之一;二者的不同点在于探索达到中道的方法、途径上的差别和它在各自地域对后世起作用的程度的差异。中道思想的积极作用是价值的主流,消极作用是支流,对其应该扬长避短。     

机制构建:当前中国行政道德建设的路径选择

切实加强行政道德建设是当前一个重大而紧迫的课题。从长远来看,行政道德建设的根本途径是需要构建包括正确的价值引导机制、系统的教育培训机制、科学的考核评价机制、强大的监督制约机制、完善的依法行政机制、有效的激励惩罚机制在内的行政道德建设机制。而这六种机制是互依共进、密不可分的有机逻辑整体。

The Social and Political Structuring of Faculty Ethicality in Education

This study examined the experience of faculty ethicality in education. Research questions focused on faculty characterizations of professional ethics, related socialization experiences, and responses to dilemmas. Interviews were conducted with 32 faculty members and analyzed using the constant comparative method. Findings describe the experiential dimensions of faculty ethicality and the influence of a higher education ethos on professional reasoning and decision making. The tenure and promotion process is the most influential dimension; but faculty reward systems in general, as well as personal and family identification, also help to structure ethicality. Four elements of academic ethicality are discussed: standard, information, diversity, and integrity.
