Serials in Canadian Libraries in 1983

Data on serials resources in Canadian libraries are presented for the period of the three years 1981-1983. The growth of serials collections in 42 university libraries is examined, indicating uneven increases in various regions. Only Ontario university libraries recorded substantial and continued growth. These data are compared with the serial resources of the National Library and the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information, which both provide nation-wide lending services. The state of serials collections in selected college and public libraries is also presented.

The rhetoric of oratory and how to teach it

Campbell's reputation has suffered from modem conceptions that assume Aristotle's Rhetoric as the paradigm for rhetorical theory and from modern commitments to epistemic and dialogic rhetorics. A focus on the place of the passions and emotional appeal in Campbell's Philosophy of Rhetoric (POR) brings his achievement more clearly into view. The “sentiments, passions, dispositions,” three key terms in Campbell's definition of the “grand art of communication,” are an index to his consideration of non‐rational response, a consideration informed by a discussion of “the passions” in the moral psychology of the period and that culminates in Book II of Hume's Treatise on Human Nature. What emerges when POR is seen from this perspective has significance for our understanding of the relationship between reason and passion in persuasion and for our appreciation of POR, which is arguably the most coherent conception of rhetoric that we have.     

Constructing Meaning in a Technology-Rich,Global Learning Environment

Abstract

This paper introduces the Global Forum on School Leadership (GFSL) as a Type II application of interactive computing technology suitable for 21st century learners, teachers, and school leaders. Simply put, the concept of the GFSL brings together learners who share a common goal, a common subject area, or a common profession, and encourages them to interact and learn together. Among the many differences that learners bring to the learning task, the one central and very obvious difference upon which the GFSL depends is culture. In the example presented here, the GFSL creates a learning partnership between a class of neophyte school leaders enrolled in a school leader preparation program in the United States and a similar class of students enrolled in a school leader preparation program in Australia (it could be anywhere else in the world). The discussion begins with a focus on the evolution of technology use in schools and the related evolution of learning in technologically rich environments. The GFSL is introduced as a Type II application increasingly necessary in a learning world where a global focus is being forced upon learners and where global understanding and awareness is becoming a basic survival skill. The paper generates a global version of the five characteristics of Type II applications, and concludes with an analysis of the impact of the Global Forum on participants' learning experiences and professional skills.

综观二十世纪中国古代骈文研究之进程,可以将其划分为因循与突破期(20世纪初至新中国成立)和拓展与繁荣期(新中国成立后至20世纪末)两个阶段。总体来看,因循与突破期的古代骈文研究的特点为:研究范围较大,视点较多,如对于骈文的形式要素、对待骈文的态度、风格特点、骈体作法、骈文发展史等问题多有所论,既继承前人的部分观点,又有明显的突破。拓展与繁荣期的研究成果质量颇高,涉及的问题较多,如对骈文的评价、骈文的文体特征及美学特征、成因及发展演变、与其他文体的关系、关于骈文理论批评著作、骈体作家作品、骈文史研究等,角度不一,方法灵活,论述透彻,观点鲜明。

Abstract

Higher education is moving toward increased online and blended learning formats; however, finding useful resources for such teaching can be challenging. One useful device for integrating multimedia in online and blended teaching is the open video repository (OVR), which principally provides freely accessible curated videos and also often suggestions for applying these videos to student learning. From a review of leading online sources in the social and natural sciences, this article describes the foundational OVR environment and acts as an initial guide for those interested in using OVRS.
