The Concept of Inclusive Education: Teacher Training and Acquisition of English Language in the Hearing Impaired

Three languages are widely used in schools in Kenya – English, Kiswahili and Kenya Sign Language. Many pupils with hearing impairments are taught separately from the mainstream, in specialist settings. The fact that most of the formal teaching, assessment and examination processes in Kenyan schools rely upon spoken and written English compounds the separation of these pupils from the mainstream of education and, potentially, from the mainstream of society. In this article, Gertrude Wamae, graduate assistant in the Department of English and Linguistics at Kenyatta University, and Rachael Kang'ethe-Kamau, lecturer in the Department of Special Education at Kenyatta University, discuss the relationships between language, hearing impairment and inclusion in the Kenyan context. The article suggests that the use of signed exact English would enhance opportunities for inclusion for those with hearing impairments and that programmes of teacher training need to take account of persuasive research in this area. The article closes with a plea for further research, carried out collaboratively by educationalists, linguists, teacher trainers and practitioners, to develop policies and practices suited to more inclusive futures. The article is based on a paper presented to the International Conference on Inclusive Education run by Maseno University in September 2002.     

A comparison of verbal output and receptivity in relation to attraction and communication satisfaction in interpersonal relationships

This study tested relationships among verbal output, behavioral receptivity, attraction, and communication satisfaction in a variety of longer and shorter term relationships of differing levels of liking. Two behaviorally referenced reports on others were developed to measure perceived behavioral output and perceived behavioral receptivity. The study tested hypotheses within the attraction paradigm. Results generally supported the notion of an important reinforcement value of high behavioral receptivity and moderate verbal output. Substantial proportions of highly verbal people appeared to be below average in receptivity.     

Collaborative teaching in a linguistically and culturally diverse higher education setting: a case study of a postgraduate accounting program

The Language for Professional Communication in Accounting project has changed teaching practice in a linguistically and culturally diverse postgraduate accounting program at Macquarie University in Australia. This paper reflects on the project’s interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to diversity in the classroom by tracing its growth and development and describing the way in which it is supporting the integration of professional communication skills and discipline‐specific content within the Master of Accounting program. In particular, the paper demonstrates that discipline specialists working in a continuous and collaborative relationship with English language specialists, to integrate and assess communication skills and enrich the curriculum, leads to better outcomes for students and staff. The paper contributes to a growing literature on approaches that integrate particular graduate attributes into programs with diverse student populations, rather than bolt‐on interventions by language specialists that have limited outcomes.     

高速铁路无线通信系统半实物仿真试验平台

介绍了高速铁路无线通信系统半实物仿真试验平台的结构、工作原理。该半实物仿真平台可以对不同移动速度,在干扰条件下接收信号电平,高速铁路无线电波传播环境进行准确的模拟,配合QoS测试系统与接口监测系统,实现了在实验室环境下对高速铁路无线通信系统的性能进行评估与异常情况分析。与当前广泛采用的现场测试相比,该平台上进行半实物仿真具有实施成本低、周期短,测试环境透明、可控、可重复,不受现场环境的限制,测试完备性有保障。     

英语口头交际能力的台前幕后——论英语语感及英美文化对英语口头交际能力的支撑

总体上说,中国学生的英语口头交际能力薄弱,这种状况与缺乏语感及文化准备有关。在英语学习中,语感及文化两大因素对口头交际能力有着重要的影响。语感的真正形成要在大量的交际和实用中完成,同时应尽可能地了解中西方文化的差异。     

基于PC机的投影机控制系统的设计与实现

本文应用C 语言开发一个基于对话框的控制系统,实现了计算机对投影机的开关机及输入信号的控制。文中介绍了软件的设计,计算机与投影机之间的通信,硬件系统的连线,通信线的制作。     

英语口语交际策略课堂教学的实证研究

本文报告了有关英语口语交际策略课堂教学的一次实验。本次实验为期一个学期,旨在探明口语交际策略的可教性、学生对口语交际策略教学的认同程度及学生使用交际策略的倾向性。本研究所取得的实验数据表明：1．交际策略是可教的,并且是有效提高学生的策略意识和促进口语流利性的一种重要手段。2．学生认同交际策略课堂教学,对不同交际策略的倾向程度不同,较多认可和喜欢迂回策略和拖延策略。3．学生策略意识的提高并未表示他们的实际策略使用频率和能力会有同等程度的增长。     

英语课堂教学中的跨文化交际——一项对外籍教师与中国学生的调查

文章以一项对大学英语教学中外籍教师的调查为基础,探讨了外教的教学风格、教学方法和教学内容,他们的教学风格、教学方法和教学内容是否被中国学生所接受,以及他们的教学效果和课堂内的跨文化交际的效果如何。同时,还分析了外教的文化背景怎样对他们的课堂教学产生影响。最后,文章指出了外教教学上的一些不足之处,旨在促进外教和中国学生的相互理解,并且使英语课堂成为跨文化交际的一个有效的场所。     

东北亚地区国际科技交流与合作现状分析

科学技术是推动经济与社会发展的动力，促进国际科技交流与合作是推动东北亚地区经济发展的重要途径之一。政府和民间的科技交流与合作是国际科技交流与合作的两翼，两者互相补充，缺一不可。为此，应充分发挥大学的主导作用，巩固辽宁省在东北亚地区科技交流与合作中的重要地位。
