Florens’ Identity Loss and Reconstruction in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy from Lacanian Concept of Other

Other is an important concept in Lacan’s psychology theory, which plays a critical role in a subject’s identity formation. The formation of a subject’s self-identity is based on other, initially its mother, the absence of the other will cause the subject’s identity loss and the reconstruction on the new other. Therefore, this article analyzes the main subject Florens’ identity loss and her identity reconstruction by applying Lacan’s concept of other.

Beloved and A Mercy are widely regarded as a companion piece to each other.This thesis intends to employ Gerard Genette’s narrow-sense intertextuality to study Two Black male Characters in BelovedA Mercy:Paul Dthe Blacksmith.It is hoped that this thesis will reveal the deep concern of Morrison not only for the future of women of her own race,but also for the black men.And by the creation of Paul D and the blacksmith,Morrison wants to show us her definition of ideal relationships between man and woman:Male participation is indispensable in a female’s growth and redemption.Only in the process of jointly conquering the shadows and tribulations of the past,can they reach real mutual understanding and harmony.

Is He Living,or Is He Dead is a splendid sample of Twain’ s bitter satire.By focusing on textual analysis of the story,this thesis is trying to illustrate "surviving by dying",such a paradox of life implied by Mark Twain,and to reveal the tragic nature masked by the humorous satire in the story.
