Higher Education and the Elaboration of Successful Democracies and Economies

The author, the Executive Director of the Washington, D. C.-based Association of International Educators, makes a plea for the continuation and expansion of educational and academic international exchange programmes. The direct and indirect beneficiaries of such programmes develop all sorts of cross-cultural insights and skills that make them both valuable world citizens and enlightened citizens of their respective countries. Despite the dampening effect of the 11 September 2001 events, the United States is urged to continue encouraging international students to come to the United States and to facilitate their periods of residence. The United States can also learn from ongoing European efforts to internationalize its higher education.     

An Empirical Investigation of the Construct Validity of Empathic Understanding Ratings

This study examined the effect of different amounts of client-therapist interaction data on empathy ratings. Audiotaped therapist-client interactions including client statement, therapist response, and subsequent client response were rated for therapist empathy by high-functioning, experienced raters. Raters made significantly different judgments about levels of therapist empathy depending on the amount of therapist-client interaction data available. The raters tended to give therapist responses higher empathy ratings when they did not hear the client's preceding statement.     

A Comparative Study of Pre-Service Teachers’ Views on Ethical Issues in Classroom Assessment in China and the United States

The purpose of this study was to compare pre-service teachers’ views of ethical issues in assessment practices in the US and China. Focus group interviews were conducted among 16 pre-service teachers from the US and 15 pre-service teachers from China. Results indicated that the inclusion of effort in grading is a key issue for the pre-service teachers in both the US and China. American pre-service teachers have more consistent views with experts regarding using multiple assessment methods and communications about grading. Pre-service teachers in both countries appeared to have consistent views with experts regarding the confidentiality and standardized test preparation. The findings of this study can help build guidelines regarding ethical issues in classroom assessment.     

Cognitive Methods in Counselor Training

With the renewed interest in the role of cognition in counselor training, numerous studies examining this phenomenon have emerged. This article reviews existing literature relevant to cognitive issues in training. The effects of various cognitive attributes such as conceptual level and cognitive style are discussed. Similarly, the impact of various cognitive training strategies on trainee performance are examined, such as modification of trainee cognitions to enhance skill generalization and cognitive restructuring techniques to alter maladaptive cognitions of trainees. In addition, methodological issues that have served to limit research activity are addressed. Brief recommendations are offered for future research and training efforts.
