HOW MANY CULTURES?

The debate about the proper relationship between the sciences and the humanities as formulated by C.P. Snow in his influential lecture, “The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution” and as rebutted by F.R. Leavis in a lecture entitled, “The Significance of Lord Snow” still goes on today. Its frames of reference, however, should be broadened from concentration on the lack of communication routes between the two cultures in question so as to deal with the problem of the lack of communication within given cultures and the rise of overlapping cultures such as that of social scientists. The debate, so far as universities are concerned, should be not so much one of science versus humanities but one of general versus specialized education with increased importance being given to the role and scope of continuing education. The university should be one place in society in which cultures communicate and converge and problems are solved critically and imaginatively so that graduates may emerge truly educated.     

Impact and educational outcomes of a small group self‐directed teaching strategy in a clinical neuroscience curriculum

The complexity of the material being taught in clinical neuroscience within the medical school curriculum requires creative pedagogies to teach medical students effectively. Many clinical teaching strategies have been developed and are well described to address these challenges. However, only a few have been evaluated to determine their impact on the performance of students studying clinical neuroscience. Interactive, 2‐hour, self‐directed small‐group interactive clinical case‐based learning sessions were conducted weekly for 4 weeks to integrate concepts learned in the corresponding didactic lectures. Students in the small groups analyzed cases of patients suffering from neurological disease that were based on eight learning objectives that allowed them to evaluate neuroanatomical data and clinical findings before presenting their case analysis to the larger group. Students’ performances on the formative quizzes and summative tests were compared to those of first‐year medical students in the previous year for whom the self‐directed, small‐group interactive clinical sessions were not available. There was a significant improvement in the summative performance of first‐year medical students with self‐directed clinical case learning in the second year (Y2) of teaching clinical neuroscience (P < 0.05) when compared with first‐year students in the first year (Y1) for whom the self‐directed learning approach was not available. Student performance in the formative assessments between Y1 and Y2 was not significantly different (P = 0.803). A target of ≥70% student scoring above 80% in the final summative examination was met. The current study revealed evidence for the impact and educational outcomes of a self‐directed, clinical teaching strategy in a clinical neuroscience curriculum for first‐year medical students. Transition to Retirement: Effect of Participation in Preretirement Education in Nigeria

This study investigated the effect of preretirement education on the retirement transition plans of workers in Nigeria. The sample includes preretirees of Wema Bank PLC and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority who participated in preretirement education workshops. The study shows that a majority of workers would prefer to retire at the normal age, but they fear that management can retire them at any time and for any reason. This fear was revealed by the concerns generated when participants received their letters of invitation for the preretirement workshop. The findings show that more than two-thirds (88.9%) of the workers agreed that preretirement education would assist them in their adjustment to retirement. The study concludes that preretirement education has the ability to generate positive changes in attitudes and habits as well as create positive preparedness. These benefits of preretirement education will facilitate the transition to retirement.     

“The Best Minute and a Half of Audio”

In the introduction to a police audio recording of Bristol Palin describing her family’s involvement in an Alaska house party brawl, CNN anchor Carol Costello commented: “This is quite possibly the best minute and a half of audio we’ve ever come across.” The incident, however, involved an alleged assault—an act that mainstream journalism generally reports in a serious manner. Costello’s glib treatment of the event could therefore be seen as potentially breaching the boundaries of professional practice, which brought a widespread media response from both mainstream organizations and right-leaning blogs. Through textual analysis of these items, this study illustrates the challenge of conducting media boundary work—and the role strain that results—when the subject of a story occupies space within both entertainment and news spheres.
