The effects of age of viewer and gender of the narrator on children's visual attention and recall of story ideas

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the age of viewers and the gender of the narrator in a film, and to examine the interaction between these two variables. Subjects in second and fifth grades were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. One group watched a film narrated by a female and the other watched the same film narrated by a male. As subjects watched the film, the experimenters measured their visual attention to the program. Recall of story ideas was also measured, using a multiple-choice test. The results indicated that the gender of the narrator influenced the recall of second-graders, but did not influence the recall of fifth-graders. Results suggest that older children pay greater visual attention to a program than younger children. Implications for developing audio-visual materials for children are discussed.     

Assessment and intervention practices with second‐language learners among school psychologists

This paper describes assessment and intervention practices with second‐language learners among practicing school psychologists in one southwestern state. A 10‐item survey was used to gain information about the assessment instruments and procedures and intervention practices used with linguistically different children by school psychologists. Surveys were mailed to all members of the state professional organization. Thirty‐three percent of the surveys were returned and considered usable for analyses. An analysis of the returned surveys revealed that a number of school psychologists are using alternative assessment techniques, such as curriculum‐based measurement, dynamic assessment, and portfolio assessment with this population. The majority, however, continue to use traditional cognitive tests, such as the Weschler Scales, and traditional interventions, such as resource room service delivery. Results of the survey are discussed in terms of best practices with linguistically different children. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

ERM on a Shoestring: Betting on an Alternative Solution

Some libraries are not ready, willing, or able to make a big commitment to an expensive electronic resources management system. But, with a bit of creativity and flexibility, librarians can come up with alternatives that will effectively manage the information they need at little or no additional cost. Although makeshift solutions may not be ideal, presenters Jennifer Watson and Dalene Hawthorne stress the importance of getting started with the task of gathering information about one's electronic resources in some workable way and using whatever tools are available.     

ERM on a Shoestring—Workshop Summary Report

Commercial electronic resource management systems are complex and expensive. Alternative solutions to e-resource management were discussed by Dalene Hawthorne and Jennifer Watson in their presentation entitled “ERM on a Shoestring,” at the Seventh Annual E-resource Workshop held at Mississippi State University on July 20, 2007. University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) uses a combination of Blackboard, Filemaker and MySQL databases to keep track of their licenses and invoices for electronic resources. Emporia State University (ESU) uses their ILS to manage license agreements. The presentation covers the benefits of each option and practical information for setting up an electronic resource management system.
