Representation of the cell and its processes in high school students: An integrated view

This paper presents an integrated view of the ideas and conceptual problems of high school students with respect to the cell, its processes, structure and relation to the functions of multicellular organisms. The theme of cell has divided into eight topics, with a questionnaire for each topic. In these topics, different levels of representation and understanding are distinguished between general considerations about plants and animals, those connected with processes at organ and system levels and, finally, the level of cell processes. Data from 1200 students were analysed. Results show that students have an analogical mechanism that establishes an isomorphism between the representation of the functioning of multicellular organisms of cell processes. A series of problems in understanding was also shown. Results imply that these problems are mainly due to students' lack of differentiation between some processes at organism and organ level, and have important implications for learning this subject. Finally, some suggestions are made for teaching.     

Student Engagement and Institutional Graduation Rates: Identifying High-Impact Educational Practices for Community Colleges

Philanthropists, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners are increasingly focused on a college completion crisis in the United States. Collectively and independently, they have called for increasing the number of adults with postsecondary certificates and degrees as a national imperative. Using the 2007 administration of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), this article explores the statistical relationships between student engagement, as measured by the CCSSE, and institutional graduation rates reported to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Both bivariate correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses yielded results that reinforce the salience of student engagement as an important predictor of college completion. Specifically, the CCSSE student engagement benchmarks of active and collaborative learning and support for learners are positive predictors of institutional graduation rates. The article concludes with suggestions around instructional practices and institutional policies to consider for community college leaders committed to the completion agenda.     

Fulfilling Entrepreneurial Curriculum Needs in Rural Communities

ABSTRACT

This study examined the business curriculum offered by schools in the third largest community college system in the nation. The objective was to determine the degree that entrepreneurial-oriented curricula meet the needs of young people interested in starting their own business. By analyzing the business curriculum of community colleges throughout the state of Illinois, the study provides an unbiased evaluation of the course offerings. A comparison of rural/urban disparities was also conducted.     

Towards the decolonisation of religion education in a pre-service education classroom

ABSTRACT

In this article, I reflect on my attempts to decolonise religious education at a historically white university in a post-apartheid South Africa. This pre-service education project conducted in 2017 happened against the backdrop of two events, namely, a renewed curriculum policy, Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and the #RhodesMustFall (RMF) and #FeesMustFall (FMF) protests. These events encouraged me to reflect on my academic role as a teacher-educator preparing pre-service teachers to teach religion in schools. This led to me asking many questions such as, what is the effect of my teaching religious education?, How do teacher-educators prepare religious education pre-service teachers for a multicultural and multireligious society?, How does my teaching align itself with the decolonisation of education? and How do I redress the colonial past in my religious education classroom? The data which included reflective reports, student experiences and self-reflexivity acknowledged the findings that religion education served as a unifying factor in building social cohesion. The significance of this paper lies in the argument that decolonisation becomes an imperative if one is striving for social justice and intends to commit oneself to a more equitable society where crossing borders must be a seamless act.     

Evaluation of two interventions to reduce aggressive and antisocial behavior in first and second graders in a resource-poor setting

We conducted a three-arm cluster randomized controlled trial (n = 2491) to evaluate a teacher delivered intervention to reduce aggressive and antisocial behavior and increase prosocial behavior in the classroom. A second aim of this trial was to establish whether combining this intervention with an intervention for parents was better than the teacher-only intervention. This evaluation was conducted in a resource-poor setting (Pereira, Colombia). The findings show that both interventions prevented increases in aggressive and antisocial behavior. However, the teacher-only intervention also had a positive impact on increasing prosocial behavior.     

Development Of A Consultation Profile Of Interventions Perceived As Successful By Human Performance Technology Consultants

The purpose of this study was to develop a consultation profile of interventions perceived as successful by internal or external Human Performance Technology consultants. Members of the National Society for Performance and Instruction [The National Society for Performance and Instruction is currently known as the International Society for Performance and Instruction] and the American Society for Training and Development were asked to describe in detail a single intervention which they considered successful in terms of outcomes for both themselves and their clients. The results indicate that the scope of these interventions is not limited to training but includes a broader range of performance improvement interventions. This supports the notion that professionals in the field are undertaking more systemic approaches in their practice. An average of 40% of total project time is allocated to front-end analysis. The projects reported by our respondents also emphasize collaborative decision-making, especially during the front-end analysis phase. Factors most commonly reported as responsible for the success of projects were support from the client, collaboration between team members, and clear definition of expectations.
