In this paper four scenarios are presented which illustrate possible futures of teacher education in Europe. These scenarios are the result of a project of Research and Development Centre 19 of the Association for Teacher Education in Europe. 1 The four scenarios differ from each other in their emphasis on four driving forces: pragmatism, idealism, individualism and social coherence. Each scenario is described in terms of characteristics of society, education and teacher education, roles of teachers and teacher educators, and is illustrated in a short scene.  相似文献

Change is always difficult, and there is no great doubt that teachers need time to come to terms with it. This fact is, however, too often forgotten. In the spirit of my earlier work, this paper is shaped by an action research perspective. It provides some insights into the learning experiences of a group of eleven experienced secondary mathematics teacher, who were enrolled in a Perspectives on Mathematics Education two semesters course, within the context of a Masters on Mathematics Teaching programme, held at a Department of Mathematics, in a Portuguese University. The first part of the paper highlights the conflicting pressures and stresses suffered, during the first semester course, by the participating teachers. Confrontation with new ideas about both mathematics and mathematics education, as well as work overload, had a damaging impact on the teachers’ self‐confidence and morale. The second part of the paper covers the second semester course by addressing three fundamental questions for teachers, which aimed at helping the students bridge the academic mathematics and the mathematics education worlds. Finally, brief scenarios of three participating teachers’ professional development throughout the course are discussed in order to illustrate the challenges they had to face and the possibilities the course (and the Masters programme) offered to promote individual change.  相似文献

This article discusses the impact of internationalisation on the strategy and language policy of the Portuguese University of Aveiro. In addition, it analyses how the Department of Languages and Cultures of the University contributes to the language policy. For the University of Aveiro, internationalisation is a priority and a distinctive feature of its profile. It is a member of many international networks and consortia in Europe and participates in a wide range of international study and research programmes. The principles of the Bologna Process have challenged UA policy makers to adopt a language policy and to give study programmes a more international profile by considering the option of English as a medium of instruction.
At the same time, and paradoxically, the role of the Portuguese language will become increasingly important in the near future because many of the foreign students at Aveiro come from the former Portuguese-speaking colonies. We conclude that the question of language has led to local dilemmas, discussions and sometimes tensions about the role of the English language in processes of internationalisation and curriculum change at the University of Aveiro.  相似文献

In the preceding papers the scenario model of ATEE-RDC19 is used as a reflecting instrument on trends and development in teacher education in different European countries. In this short contribution, a reflection on those papers is made to see whether common trends arise. In this rough picture, it is possible to see that in all analysed countries there is a tendency towards a more pragmatic and individualistic approach in society, influencing teacher education. But these two trends (toward pragmatism and towards idealism) are not in all case studies strongly connected. However, bearing in mind some critical comments on the scenario model, strong and definitive conclusions are to be avoided.  相似文献

The adjustment of black African students to what, under apartheid, were white universities has long been a concern for South African educators. Dimensions of adjustment to university were examined for 339 African black and white freshmen attending a historically white South African university, using the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire. No significant differences were found between black African and white participants on academic adjustment or institutional commitment. However, black African participants reported significantly poorer levels of social adjustment, and somewhat poorer levels of personal-emotional adjustment. Further investigations found relationships between academic performance, race and additional variables hypothesised to be associated with adjustment.  相似文献
