The Use of Undergraduate Projects to Simulate the Manufacturing Life Cycle

The paper describes a project activity which simulates the manufacturing life cycle. Students are required to respond to a tender and to produce a working prototype of a device and in so doing to work through, and to record, the various stages of the cycle. The exercise is highly motivating and is seen by students as a strong influence in their valuation of manufacturing as a worthwhile pursuit.
