This Participatory Action Research (PAR) project worked with four active street life oriented U. S. Born African men, to document how a community sample of street life oriented U. S. Born African men between the ages of 16–65, frame and use “street life” as a Site of Resiliency (Payne, Dissertation, 2005; Journal of Black Psychology 34(1):3–31, 2008). Qualitative data was collected in the form of 20 individual and two group interviews. These data reveal an inter-generational, conceptualization and use, of the term “street love” in street life oriented U. S. born African men. Also, these data reveal that notions of “street love” extend out a critique of community professionals (e.g., community researchers/interventionists, social workers, etc.) as being unable and unwilling to produce “real help” in the local community. Examples of street love, revealed in the study, include the men offering advice/counsel, money or “free turkeys” during Thanksgiving to one another as well as other members of the local community. Results support Payne’s (2005) three-dimension conceptualization of “street love”: (1) individual, (2) group and (3) communal level expressions of “street love”.

To examine the possible involvement of human B cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), CD4+ cells, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), as biomarkers in early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), activities of these biomarkers in serum were demonstrated by the method of Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay. Two groups of subjects (60 for each), were examined in this study; healthy controls and patients with HCC. The present results declare that, significant decrease in Bcl-2 (p ≤ 0.0001), and CD 4+ (p ≤ 0.001), while significant increase in HGF and MMP-9 (p ≤ 0.05). These findings imply an influence of these biomarkers by the existence of hepatic carcinoma that might reflect the progression of disease and a distinction between the pathological mechanisms involved in hepatic carcinoma. Since, the serum MMP-9 activity was significantly varied between each stage of HCC. An individual profile of the present investigated parameters was detected that might serve as an easy accessing serum marker to monitor the progression of hepatic cell disorders.  相似文献

Homocysteine concentration affected by the activities of the enzymes methylene tetra-hyrdofolate reductase (MTHFR). Polymorphisms in MTHFR gene associated with an impairment of MTHFR activity. Hyperhomocysteinemia is a result of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in MTHFR 677 C>T that can cause homocysteine levels in the blood to increase. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) gene polymorphism, changes in homocysteine concentrations and progress of renal impairment in young adult hypertensive patients. Two hundred young hypertensive patients (age 21–24 years) were involved in this study; they were classified into patients with and without renal impairment in addition to 200 age and sex matched healthy controls. All participants were submitted to laboratory investigations as assay of MTHFR gene polymorphism C677T (rs1801133) by PCR/RFLP, determination of lipid profile, homocysteine and folic acid concentrations in addition to urinary albumin creatinine ratio (UACR). The levels of both homocysteine and UACR in the TT genotype patients were higher than those in the CC genotype group. Individuals who carry the T allele were more risky to hypertension and progress to early renal impairment in young age compared with those carrying the C allele [OR 2.02 (1.33–3.08), P < 0.001]. Genetic variants of C677T MTHFR gene and hyperhomocysteinemia may be responsible for rapid progress of renal impairment in Egyptian young age hypertensive patients. TT genotype or T allele may be considered as a predisposing factor for both elevated Hcy levels and the development of renal impairment. This study believed that lowering of homocysteine level can reduce renal impairment of hypertensive patients.  相似文献

Microbial fermentation process development is pursuing a high production yield. This requires a high throughput screening and optimization of the microbial strains, which is nowadays commonly achieved by applying slow and labor-intensive submerged cultivation in shake flasks or microtiter plates. These methods are also limited towards end-point measurements, low analytical data output, and control over the fermentation process. These drawbacks could be overcome by means of scaled-down microfluidic microbioreactors (μBR) that allow for online control over cultivation data and automation, hence reducing cost and time. This review goes beyond previous work not only by providing a detailed update on the current μBR fabrication techniques but also the operation and control of μBRs is compared to large scale fermentation reactors.  相似文献

This study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms of melatonin to manage neurological damage in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) induced in ovariectomized rats. Forty adult female rats were enrolled in our study and were classified as; gonad intact control, ovariectomized control group, ovariectomized rats received melatonin, ovariectomized rats injected with AlCl3 to induce AD and AD-induced rats treated with melatonin. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), B cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and acetylcholine (Ach) were estimated in the brain tissues of the different groups. Treatment of AD-induced rats with melatonin produced marked improvement in the most studied biomarkers which was confirmed by histological investigation of the brain. In Conclusion, melatonin significantly ameliorates the neurodegeneration characteristic of AD in experimental animal model due to its antioxidant, antiapoptotic, neurotrophic and anti-amyloidogenic activities.  相似文献

Hormones play an important role in the digestive system. The main hormones that control digestion are gastrin, secretin, and cholecystokinin. Herein, the current study is concerned with assessing the effect of spasmo canulase and librax drugs on the human hormones profile. Blood samples were withdrawn from adult patients to measure serum FSH, E2, LH, prolactin, progesterone, DHEAS, testosterone, TSH, T3, T4, fasting insulin, and cortisol. All hormone concentrations were determined quantitatively using ELISA procedure. Intriguingly, the present study showed putative changes including thyroid and sex hormonal profiles. Eventually, we concluded that the prospective study could be important in drug dose optimization and providing new medical guidelines to avoid side effects that could harm patients.  相似文献

In this paper, a new homomorphic image watermarking method implementing the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) algorithm is presented. The idea of the proposed method is based on embedding the watermark with the SVD algorithm in the reflectance component after applying the homomorphic transform. The reflectance component contains most of the image features but with low energy, and hence watermarks embedded in this component will be invisible. A block-by-block implementation of the proposed method is also introduced. The watermark embedding on a block-by-block basis makes the watermark more robust to attacks. A comparison study between the proposed method and the traditional SVD watermarking method is presented in the presence of attacks. The proposed method is more robust to various attacks. The embedding of chaotic encrypted watermarks is also investigated in this paper to increase the level of security.  相似文献

Urine is a proven source of metabolite biomarkers and has the potential to be a rapid, noninvasive, inexpensive, and efficient diagnostic tool for various human diseases. Despite these advantages, urine is an under-investigated source of biomarkers for multiple sclerosis (MS). The objective was to investigate the level of some urinary metabolites (urea, uric acid and hippuric acid) in patients with MS and correlate their levels to the severity of the disease, MS subtypes and MS treatment. The urine samples were collected from 73 MS patients-48 with RRMS and 25 with SPMS- and age matched 75 healthy controls. The values of urinary urea, uric acid and hippuric acid in MS patients were significantly decreased, and these metabolites in SPMS pattern showed significantly decrease than RRMS pattern. Also showed significant inverse correlation with expanded disability status scale and number of relapses. Accordingly, they may act as a potential urinary biomarkers for MS, and correlate to disease progression.  相似文献
