The Internet has been described by many critics as providing a friendly home for racist web-sites, whose number has been steadily growing. Many of these sites display vicious anti-Semitic, anti-black, and anti-gay propaganda. However much they disgust most people, in the US they are protected by the First Amendment. Canada, by contrast, has hate discrimination provisions in its Criminal Code. Canadians seem to be much more willing than Americans to abridge freedom of expression when the speech is hateful. Various European countries take a stronger stand than Canada in their determination to combat racism. In this talk, I will explore the Canadian position in the context of the case of Oliver, BC. It was the location of an Internet Service Provider (ISP), Fairview Technology Centre, accused of hosting a number of hate sites. Attempts to deal with this accusation constitute the central part of the paper.  相似文献

Global concern for knowledge about and competencies for entrepreneurship and small business is growing. When discussing university training for entrepreneurship an action-oriented approach is needed. Originating in an elaboration of Kolb's model of action learning, an ‘entrepreneurial action capability’ (EAC) test is constructed. The test is based on the ‘critical-incident’ technique and validated against other images of entrepreneurial characteristics. Swedish university students, including those on special programmes oriented towards innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as existing small-business owner-managers are analyzed with the help of the EAC and associated tests. Substantive conclusions indicate that owner-managers, business students and engineering students score differently on the EAC test. It is argued that these groups use their intuition and analogical reasoning differently. The lest findings are used to modify the original learning model. Methodological lessons are that any formal tests, however realistic with respect to contents, are alien to practitioners. Thus, comparisons across different learning contexts for entrepreneurship entail great difficulties.  相似文献

The present investigation studies the levels of emotional intimacy within nonclinical single-parent families and intact families, and how these may relate to children's academic, social and emotional adjustments. Participants were 94 children of divorced families, 95 children of intact families, and their mothers (60 married and 58 divorced). The inventory of family feelings (IFF) and Kvebaek family sculpture technique (KFST) were used to examine subjects' emotional relationships with their family members. The results show significant differences between the divorced and intact groups on several measures of intimacy and adjustment. Most of these differences, however, are found to be small (as reflected by their small size effect). The only exception is with regard to the children's feeling of intimacy with their divorced noncustodial father. The quality of this dyad relationship also has a predictive power for the children's psychological, social and academic levels of functioning. These results are discussed in the context of divorced families' emotional boundaries and concerns over the long-term effects of parental divorce on children.  相似文献

A sociocultural perspective for supervision practice uses the concepts of acculturation, apprenticeship, and reflective assessment to describe supervision in counselor education. Supervision can be viewed as an intersubjective process that revolves around solving ambiguous and unstructured problems; key features include the coconstruction of shared meaning, framed by a continuous cycle of reflection and action, and the emergence of a professional identity.
