The analysis of biochemical parameters in 162 patients with various neoplastic disorders along with 50 normal subjects showed significant rise in serum alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase as compared to normal subjects. 21 patients with other monoclonal gammopathies which include infection and immunological diseases were also studied. Parameters such as serum calcium, uric acid, total protein, albumin and globulin were also analyzed in 42 (26%) cases of multiple myeloma, 27 (17%) cases of gastro-intestinal malignancies, 22 (14%) cases of urogenital malignancies, 11 (6%) cases of carcinoma breast, 4 (2%) cases of bone tumors, 21 (12%) cases of other monoclonal gammopathies, including 7 (4%) cases of infection and 14 (8%) cases of immunological diseases. The results indicate use of enzymes alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase in neoplastic disorders. 相似文献

HIV-infected adults may be likely to have metabolic syndrome (MS) at younger ages and in the absence of obesity compared with general population. In the present study, we determined prevalence of MS and its association with oxidative deoxy nucleic acid (DNA) damage in HIV-1 infected patients with different ART status. We used plasma level of the oxidized base, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), as a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage. To measure plasma 8-OHdG we used 8-OHdG enzyme-linked, immunosorbent assay. The biomarkers of MS were insulin resistance, Cholesterol/HDL ratio, Waist circumference and Hypertension. MS and oxidative DNA damage were significantly higher in HIV-positive patients with second line ART and first line ART than ART-naive patients. In a logistic regression analysis, increased MS was positively associated with the increased DNA damage (OR: 29.68, 95%:13.47, CI: 65.40) P = 0.0001. ART plays a significant role in the development of MS and oxidative DNA damage in HIV-positive patients taking antiretroviral therapy. Awareness and knowledge of MS and DNA damage in HIV/AIDS patients may prove helpful to clinicians to manage non-AIDS diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. To determine exact role of ART in induction of MS and DNA damage larger studies are warranted. 相似文献

The health benefits of playing football and the importance of exercise and social contact for healthy ageing are well established, but few older adults in the UK take enough exercise. Football is popular, flexible in format and draws players into engrossing, effortful and social exercise, but the physical demands of play at full speed may make it unsustainable for some older adults. Restricted to walking pace, will play still be engaging? Will health benefits be retained? Will physical demands remain manageable? This pilot study aims to investigate: (1) the experience of older adults playing walking football every week, is it sustainable and rewarding, (2) the intensity and locomotor pattern of walking football, (3) the scale and nature of walking football health benefits and (4) possible cognitive benefits of playing walking football through measures of processing speed, selective and divided attention and updating and inhibition components of executive function. ‘Walking football’ and ‘waiting list’ groups were compared before and after 12 weeks of one-hour per week football. Walking football was found to be engaging, sustainable for older adults and moderately intensive; however, selective health and cognitive benefits were not found from this brief intervention.Highlights
Walking football is a lower impact but authentic form of football that enables older players to extend their active participation.
Walking football is enjoyable and moderately demanding and may be a sustainable form of exercise for older adults.
Health and cognitive benefits to playing walking football were not found.

Recent studies have demonstrated the presence of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in cord blood of male as well as female babies. The placental progesterone and estradiol up-regulate the synthesis and secretion of PSA in Placenta. This PSA is presumed to play a role in intrauterine growth of fetus by virtue of its proteolytic action on several substrates including insulin-like-growth-factor-binding-protein-3, insulin chains and Interleukin-2. This study was planned with the objective of correlating the levels of PSA in cord blood to gestation at delivery, the type of delivery and gender of the fetus. Fifty-seven cord blood samples were collected from the umbilical cord during delivery or mid-trimester abortion and analyzed for PSA using ‘Active PSA DSL-9700 ultra sensitive’ kit employing two-site immuno-radiometric assay principle and having a detection limit of 0.001 ng/ml. Mean PSA levels in cord blood were found to be 0.112 ± 0.027 ng/ml. The concentration of PSA in cord blood was found to be higher in case of higher gestational age, male baby and operative delivery. 50 % of cord bloods for female babies had PSA below detection limit (range <0.001–0.460 ng/ml), while all the male samples had detectable PSA (range 0.11–0.973 ng/ml). Higher Progesterone levels found in prenatal maternal blood in case of male babies may be responsible for the higher cord blood PSA. Mean cord blood PSA was 0.150 ± 0.150 ng/ml in forceps delivery and 0.078 ± 0.012 ng/ml in normal vaginal delivery. Forceps delivery causes much more stress and strain as compared to a normal vaginal delivery, resulting in increased levels of adrenal glucocorticoids, and therefore, higher cord blood PSA. 相似文献

This research explored phonological and morphological awareness among Hebrew-speaking adolescents with reading disabilities
(RD) and its effect on reading comprehension beyond phonological and word-reading abilities. Participants included 39 seventh
graders with RD and two matched control groups of normal readers: 40 seventh graders matched for chronological age (CA) and
38 third graders matched for reading age (RA). We assessed phonological awareness, word reading, morphological awareness,
and reading comprehension. Findings indicated that the RD group performed similarly to the RA group on phonological awareness
but lower on phonological decoding. On the decontextualized morphological task, RD functioned on par with RA, whereas in a
contextualized task RD performed above RA but lower than CA. In reading comprehension, RD performed as well as RA. Finally,
results indicated that for normal readers contextual morphological awareness uniquely contributed to reading comprehension
beyond phonological and word-reading abilities, whereas no such unique contribution emerged for the RD group. The absence
of an effect of morphological awareness in predicting reading comprehension was suggested to be related to a different recognition
process employed by RD readers which hinder the ability of these readers to use morphosemantic structures. The lexical quality
hypothesis was proposed as further support to the findings, suggesting that a low quality of lexical representation in RD
students leads to ineffective reading skills and comprehension. Lexical representation is thus critical for both lexical as

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) has long been used as a biological marker for prostatic cancer. Recent studies have demonstrated that PSA synthesis can be induced by steroid hormones in several tissues of women. Menstrual cycle is regulated by the cyclic variation of estradiol and progesterone. This study was undertaken in order to study the correlation of serum PSA to both these corpus luteal hormones. 110 serum samples and 10 saliva samples were collected from healthy women aged 18–45 years of age having normal menstrual cycles. Active PSA DSL-9700 ultrasensitive kit with detection limit 0.001 ng/ml was used to analyze PSA. 38.2 % of all serum samples and 10 % of saliva samples had detectable concentrations of PSA. The serum PSA was highest during mid follicular phase (between 4th and 8th days of cycle). Variation in PSA levels seemed to follow the variations in progesterone with a lag period of 12–14 days, but did not appear to bear any relationship with the estradiol levels. 相似文献

A 40 days old male baby born to a consanguineous couple was found to have highly viscous and milky serum with caking of chylomicrons
on refrigeration of serum. Cholesterol was 889.5 mg/dl (23.04mmol/L) and Triglycerides 12881 mg/dl (141.69mmol/L). He was
active and did not have any hepatospleenomegaly, xanthomas or dysmorphic features. Thyroid functions were normal. Lipid electrophoresis
showed thick chylomicron band. There was positive family history of hypertriglyceridemia in a first cousin. Both siblings
and both parents of the index case had normal lipid profiles. This child was referred to higher centre where he was put on
Lipid lowering drugs (Gemfibrozil), Iron drops and special formula for feeding containing medium chain fatty acids. 相似文献
