The Learning Region between Pedagogy and Economy

Economic growth is stimulated through learning. In ‘the learning economies’ of those European regions that chose to develop their human and intellectual capital wisely, benefits have been visible. But this is a one-dimensional outlook in a multi-dimensional world. A ‘Learning Region’ is an entirely different entity, pooling and mobilising its resources from the community, its institutions, culture and heritage, and industry, to mention just a few, for the common, social, economic and ecological good. This article examines and critiques recent ideas and perceptions behind the concept of the learning region and suggests why, in the Italian context, they have not been successful so far in entering the consciousness of regional leaders. It argues that greater individualisation, privatisation and the ascendancy of the market approach to learning are, perhaps paradoxically, barriers to establishing the regional structures that would implement lifelong learning for all and enhance economic and social progress. Cooperation, partnership, sharing and the integration of stakeholders in respecting a common goal are far more difficult to achieve in today's climate.     

Current Use of the DSM-III-R in Counselor Education

A survey of 146 counselor education programs revealed that most teach the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd edition, revised) as part of practicum or internship; few offer a separate course.     

Project Math-Muse: Interactive Mathematics Exhibits for Young Children

This paper describes the goals and preliminary work of Project Math-Muse, an interdisciplinary team of university and public school educators working with children's museums to design and evaluate interactive mathematics exhibits for young children. Authors discuss the rationale for the development of small, interactive mathematics exhibits for young children, based on the goal of matching (a) reform-based views of mathematics, which emphasize children's active, hands-on engagement in meaningful activities, with (b) the principles that guide children's museums. Observations of children and adults interacting with two exhibit prototypes developed at a local children's museum are presented along with discussions of some of the issues that have arisen in this work so far. The paper concludes with directions for continued work.     

Classification of Dual Relationships in the Helping Professions

A classification system of dual relationships is presented. Dual relationships are conceptualized as not being inherently harmful or unethical. Options available to persons involved in dual relationships are discussed.
