The article begins with a brief introduction to the development of Welsh society and industry between 1870 and 1914. This is followed by a review of Welsh education, especially technical education, in that period, highlighting its backwardness and the factors accounting for that backwardness. The report of the Haldane Commission is then examined against a background of a brief statement of the ‘revisionist’ case. Against the British Retardation theory, the performance of south Wales' industrialists is assessed. This reveals that in contradiction to the ‘revisionist’ view that British industrialists did as well as could have been expected, such was not the case in south Wales. 相似文献

This paper presents findings from a survey of pre-service teacher training institutions in England with regard to the provision of health and well-being education. It examines factors affecting the inclusion of health and well-being, and explores educational implications in light of the changing landscape of pre-service teacher education in England. Provision of health and well-being education is noticeably variable across institutions, and many course leaders are unclear about the coverage in their partner schools. Course leaders regard health and well-being as an important part of the curriculum, but the focus is usually on generic health-related themes such as child protection and behaviour management, which address Government priorities, rather than on specific topics such as education about diet, drugs, alcohol, smoking, sex and relationships and physical activity. The paper argues that these aspects should be addressed for pre-service teachers to have an increased sense of self-efficacy and become capable health promoters. 相似文献

In this paper, we examine the challenges faced by faith-based institutions in a low-income, predominantly Black community seeking to take advantage of grants provided through the White House Office of Community and Faith-Based Initiatives (FBCI). FBCI is an e-Government program that assists nonprofit organizations in competing for Federal dollars with fewer bureaucratic barriers. Informed by the design-actuality framework, we interviewed clergy at seven faith-based organizations. The intent of this analysis is to juxtapose the design intentions of the government officials with the actualities expressed by the intended benefactors of the initiative. Our findings suggest that this e-Government initiative may unwittingly exacerbate existing disparities in the strategic use of information and communication technologies (ICT). 相似文献

There is a growing body of evidence that children with dyslexia have problems not just in reading but in a range of skills
including several unrelated to reading. In an attempt to compare the severity and incidence of deficits across these varied
domains, children with dyslexia (mean ages 8, 12, and 16 years), and control groups of normally achieving children matched
for IQ and for age or reading age, were tested on a range of primitive (basic) skills. The children with dyslexia performed
significantly worse than the same-age controls on most tasks, and significantly worse even than the reading-age controls on
phoneme segmentation, picture naming speed, word tachistoscopic word recognition, speeded bead threading and some balance
tasks. The overall performance of the children with dyslexia is interpreted as showing less complete automatization than normal. 相似文献
