This paper examines the various ways in which the concept of “diaspora” has important implications for rethinking traditional notions of acculturation in Psychology. In this paper, we argue that the idea of a fixed, invariant, and apolitical notion of acculturation dominates much of Psychology, and as such it needs to be revised and reexamined in light of transnational migration and global movements. Drawing on our previous and current scholarship on acculturation and identity [Bhatia, S., & Ram, A. (2001). Rethinking “acculturation” in relation to diasporic cultures and postcolonial identities. Human Development, 44, 1–17; Bhatia, S., & Ram, A. (2004). Culture, hybridity and the dialogical self: Cases from the South-Asian diaspora. Mind, Culture, and Activity, 11(3), 224–241; Bhatia, S. (2007a). American Karma: Race, culture, and identity and the Indian diaspora. New York, NY: New York University Press; Bhatia, S. (2008). Rethinking culture and identity in psychology: Towards a transnational cultural psychology. Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology, 28, 301–322], we provide a counterargument to models of acculturation that claim that all immigrants undergo a universal psychological process of acculturation and adaptation. More specifically, we show how members from the Indian diaspora reexamined their acculturation status after the events of 9/11. We use interdisciplinary research to critically examine the role of race in the acculturation process. In addition, we provide a new analytical framework to understand the larger structural forces that shape the acculturation and assimilation process of transnational and diasporic migrants. 相似文献

P-selectin, a cell adhesion molecule is elevated in many inflammatory conditions including preeclampsia which is characterized
by generalized endothelial dysfunction and vasoconstriction presumably due to free radicals or mediators released by defective
placentation. Vitamin E has been documented to protect cell membranes from oxidative damage and also decrease platelet aggregation.
The role of vitamin E in pre-eclampsia is contradictory and hence the study was undertaken. Soluble P-selectin was measured
by ELISA and Vitamin-E levels in plasma was estimated spectrofluorometrically. In our study the effect of supplementation
of 400 IU/day of Vitamin E (a-tocopheryl acetate) to patients of pre-eclampsia showed significant decreased levels of soluble
P-selectin by 2nd week as compared to patients given placebo (P = 0.005). In this short period of study no direct correlations were observed between Vitamin E or P-selectin levels with
blood pressure as well as with proteinuria. Future studies may focus on the effect of a-tocopheryl acetate or the phosphate
form of Vitamin-E, recently proposed to be the more active form on other inflammatory markers like IL-6, an important stimuli
of P-selectin release in pre-eclampsia. 相似文献

Authors report here a survey of medical student feedback on the effectiveness of two different anatomy curricula at Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. Undergraduate medical students seeking the Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery (M.B.B.S.) degrees were divided into two groups by the duration of their respective anatomy curriculum. Group 1 students had completed a longer, 18‐month curriculum whereas Group 2 counterparts followed a shorter, 12‐month curriculum. Students' responses to a questionnaire were studied. Analysis of feedback from Groups 1 and 2 contrasted the effectiveness of the two anatomy curricula. The coverage of gross anatomy was rated adequate or more than adequate by 98% of Group 1 and 91% of Group 2. A desire for greater emphasis on gross anatomy teaching was expressed by 24% of Group 1 and 50% of Group 2 (P = 0.000). Two‐thirds of all students felt that the one‐year program was not adequate, and 90% of Group 1 and 74% of Group 2 felt that clinically oriented anatomy teaching required more emphasis. Dissection was helpful or very helpful for 94% of Group 1 and 88% of Group 2. This study suggests that a better understanding of gross anatomy was gained from a course of longer duration (18 months with 915 contact hr vs. 12 months with 671 contact hr). Students who completed the longer anatomy course had greater appreciation of the need for clinically oriented anatomy teaching and dissection. It is been widely established that child schooling has far reaching influence on shaping their subsequent living, in particular,
and social and economic development of the society, in general. Although the Constitution of India provides free and compulsory
education for all children until they reach 14 years, the schooling of children – enrollment and completion of primary school
– still remains far below than the expectations. Using data from National Family Health Survey [NFHS], we attempted to understand
primary school enrollment and completion in India. Results reveal that household characteristics play a significant role towards
child schooling. The study suggests the importance of adult educational programs and opening of new schools, particularly
all-girls schools, in needed areas.

This study provides an overview of the research output of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India, in terms of number of publications contributed by faculty members and researchers. The study analyzes bibliometric indicators of published research of Jawaharlal Nehru University as indexed in the Web of Science. There were 5,007 research publications from Jawaharlal Nehru University in the four decades from 1971–2010 (70s; 80s; 90s; and 2000s). The study noted encouraging trends in collaborative research work with multiple-authored research papers. International collaboration in research was also observed among the faculty members and researchers. English was the predominant language of communication. The social scientists and humanists of Jawaharlal Nehru University publish books which are not indexed in the Web of Science. Similarly, research work published in regional languages or published in national level journals are seldom included in the Web of Science. It suggests that research needs to be done by collecting data from the Indian Citation Index and books published by the researchers in order to get an accurate and consolidated picture of the research output of the university. 相似文献

This study was conducted to find out the level of oxidative stress and effect of supplementation of vitamin C, D and Calcium
on levels of SOD, serum and urinary fluoride in children residing in endemic fluorosis area. For this the fluoride belt of
Jaipur district was selected. The parameters selected were Super oxide dismutase, serum fluoride and urinary fluoride. The
study was conducted on one hundred children, selected from four areas (25 from each area) consuming water containing 1.2,
2.4, 5.6 and 13.6 mg/l of fluoride. Drinking water fluoride, serum and urinary fluoride were measured by Ion selective electrode
method. Serum SOD by Xanthine oxidase method using kit of Ransod (kit cat. No. SD125). The post treatment values showed a
significant reduction in serum fluoride and SOD. Urinary fluoride levels increased significantly in post treatment stage.
The results revealed a normal SOD levels in all groups but an increasing trend was observed with increasing fluoride concentration.
Treatment with Calcium, Vitamin D and Vitamin C showed a significant reduction in serum fluoride and SOD and increase in urinary
fluoride. A high positive correlation between pretreatment and post treatment group was observed in serum fluoride, SOD and
urinary fluoride (P < 0.05). The study indicated an increasing oxidative stress in cases of fluorosis with increasing drinking
water fluoride concentration. Treatment with Calcium, Vitamin D and Vitamin C resulted a significant reduction in serum fluoride
and SOD and increase in urinary fluoride. 相似文献

Folate and cobalamin (Vitamin B12) are two essential micronutrients involved in one-carbon metabolism, which affects heart disease, neural tube defects and
cancer. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, the key enzyme involved in one carbon metabolism produces methyl tetrahydrofolate
from methylene tetrahydrofolate, which in turn donates methyl group to homocysteine to generate methionine. There exist two
common low function polymorphic variants of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene involving nucleotides 677 C→T and
1298 A→C, which are associated with hyperhomocysteinemia. These polymorphisms are also linked with increased risk for certain
cancers such as breast cancer and at the same time providing a protective effect on colorectal cancer. In this case control
study, we have evaluated levels of folic acid, vitamin B12 and homocysteine in patients with colorectal cancer. Folate and homocysteine levels did not differ significantly between
the two groups; however an increasing trend was noticed with increase in homocysteine levels. Vitamin B12 levels were increased in cases compared to control group. 相似文献
