DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WOMEN AND MEN REGARDING DECISIONS TO COMMIT TEST CHEATING

Few studies investigating student cheating havereported statistical tests of difference regarding theeffects of variables across gender. Using scenario-basedsurvey data from 598 university students, this study examined differences between womenand men in mean levels and effects of explanatoryvariables on intentions to cheat on a college exam.Findings showed significant gender differences in mean scores on measures of low self-control, shame,perceived external sanctions, grades, and cheatingintentions. Regression analyses showed that the effectsof morals and grades were more pronounced in predicting women's cheating intentions, whereas men weremore affected by prior cheating and perceived pleasureof cheating. Analyses further showed that higher levelsof anticipated shame among women and less self-control among men accounted for most of the variationin cheating intentions between women and men.

Reading and Writing: Digital Directions

The authors show that IT hardware and software are having an effect on literacy. As well as being aware of those changes, English teachers, they argue, should be exploiting IT for the development of those reading and writing skills necessary for the future. The article goes on to exemplify, through an exploration of how it came to be written, some of the processes and opportunities identified earlier.     

A method for estimating the in-house use of the periodical collection in the University of Minnesota Bio-Medical Library

During two one-week periods in April 1972, information on periodical title and date was gathered from periodicals collected from study and reshelving tables of the University of Minnesota Bio-Medical Library.IT WAS DETERMINED THAT: (1) a few titles accounted for most of the total use; (2) the relationship between age and amount of use of a journal may be described by the equation y = ke(-bx); and (3) the last five years of publication accounted for 58% of the total use.     

Freshman interest groups in criminal justice education

Freshman group programs have been promoted by many institutions of higher learning. However, few empirical evaluations of such programs have been reported in the scholarly literature, and none have focused on programs in criminal justice education. Subjects in this study included 130 students enrolled in an introductory criminal justice course at one institution, a portion of which (32 students) were also enrolled in sections of a group program called Freshman Interest Groups. Results showed that students enrolled in this program did better in the course than their freshmen peers and upper-class students, which analyses showed was largely due to higher attendance.
