Considerations after a Short Visit to Russia

As a result of a recent trip to Moscow the writer describes the Russian scientific educational program at the university level. Relative numbers of students and faculty members are presented along with a breakdown of the areas of study. The Russian educational effort is compared to that of other countries, particularly Italy, and suggestions as to how Italy might retain her position in industrial development through her universities are presented.     

The Value of a “Core” Business‐‐a Case Study of the Involvement of an Australian University in Vietnam: 1993‐1998

This article describes how two dovetailing processes led Swinburne University of Technology of Melbourne, Australia, to the setting up of business studies programmes in Vietnam. One of the processes was the increasingly felt need in Australia to make higher education more cost efficient that stimulated the identification and the exploitation of non‐governmental sources of funding. The other one was the decision, taken in 1986 by the Vietnamese government, to move progressively to a market‐based economy. Thus the Vietnamese government created a demand for increasing numbers of professional workers schooled in Western concepts of business management, accounting, administration, etc. The Swinburne University of Technology responded to this demand in a number of creative ways by setting up collaborative course programmes in some of the major cities of Vietnam.     

Variance and Context Differences in Teaching at Differentially Effective Schools

ABSTRACT

This study follows up on recent research exploring the differences in teaching within more or less effective schools. Results verify that teachers in more effective schools score consistently higher on indices of effective teaching than those in typical or less effective schools. Furthermore, teachers in more effective schools demonstrate less variance in teaching behaviors, indicating more formal or informal socialization at the school level. Additional differences in mean and deviation scores were noted between elementary and junior high schools, suggesting differential school processes at operation in those two levels.
