Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) has emerged as the most applicable and important tumor marker for carcinoma prostate. In the
present study PSA was determined in serum of healthy subjects, patients of benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) and Carcinoma
Prostate (Ca−P) to evaluate its diagnostic efficiency in day to day management of prostate cancer patients and in differentiating
patients of early prostate cancer from those with BPH. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) revealed 2 ng/ml and
10 ng/ml cut off serum PSA level for BPH and untreated carcinoma prostate patients (Ca−P). An extremely significant increase
(P<0.0001) was observed in mean PSA concentration in BPH patients and adenocarcinoma prostate patients when compared to healthy
males. Clinical relevance of PSA was highlighted by a case study of cancer patient prior to any therapy till death. 相似文献

Pre analytical process of extraction for accurate detection of organic acids is a crucial step in diagnosis of organic acidemias by GCMS analysis. This process is accomplished either by solid phase extraction (SPE) or by liquid–liquid extraction (LLE). Both extraction procedures are used in different metabolic laboratories all over the world. In this study we compared these two extraction procedures in respect of precision, accuracy, percent recovery of metabolites, number of metabolites isolated, time and cost in a resource constraint setup. We observed that the mean recovery from SPE was 84.1 % and by LLE it was 77.4 % (p value <0.05). Moreover, the average number of metabolites isolated by SPE and LLE was 161.8 ± 18.6 and 140.1 ± 20.4 respectively. The processing cost of LLE was economical. In a cost constraint setting using LLE may be the practical option if used for organic acid analysis. 相似文献

Now a days measurement of molecular forms of PSA has gained importance in clinical practice. Several studies have demonstrated
the production of PSA in female tissues, such as breast. The present piece of work has been undertaken with an objective to
estimate the relative proportion of the molecular forms of PSA in serum along with serum testosterone in benign and malignant
breast tumor cases and to analyze their association with the severity of the disease process 34 malignant and 26 benign breast
disease cases along with 33 healthy controls of same age group were enrolled in this study for evaluation. Serum testosterone
was measured by ELISA, whereas serum total PSA (TPSA) and free PSA (FPSA) were estimated by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay.
A significant rise of fasting plasma glucose along with prominent dyslipidemia was observed in breast tumor cases. Marked
rise in serum testosterone as well as TPSA and FPSA was documented in both benign and malignant breast tumor cases. Serum
testosterone revealed a significant positive association with both TPSA and FPSA pointing towards an etiological association
between them. However, surgical removal of tumor mass resulted in a marked decline of presurgical value of both TPSA and FPSA
with a non-significant fall in serum testosterone revealing tumor tissue as the source of FPSA and TPSA. Thus, estimation
of PSA provides prognostic information that may assist in future treatment. 相似文献

Humoral immune response against PPD derived A60 antigen was evaluated by quantification of serum A60 antibodies in thrity healthy adults not exposed to tuberculosis (Group 1), in twenty seven healthy adults exposed to tuberculosis patients i.e. staff working in wards of tuberculosis hospital for one to thirty years (group 2), in twenty five pulmonary tuberculosis patients admitted to the Institute for Chest Diseases, Hyderabad (Group 3) and in sixty neurotuberculosis patients admitted to Neurosurgery department of our institute (Group 4). Highly significant elevation of A60 antibodies was observed in pulmonary tuberculosis patients (p<0.01) compared to healthy adult groups. A significant elevation in serum was also observed in case of neurotuberculosis group compared to both healthy groups (p<0.01). A test on A60 antibodies in serum gavv a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 96.6%, positive predictive value of 81% and negative predictive value of 100% for pulmonary tuberculosis, whereas a sensitivity of 58%, positive predictive value of 79% and negative predictive value of 75% were noted for neurotuberculosis patients. Results of A60 antibodies in ten cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) obtained from non tuberculosis patients and thirty two CSF from patients of neurotuberculosis did not show significant elevation of antibodies. However the ninetyfive percentile value of CSF A60 antibodies was higher in neurotuberculosis (7.4 U/ml) group compared to nontuberculous group (3.8 U/ml) and the test showed a good positive predictive value (83%), very low negative predictive value (25%) and low sensitivity (63%). Serum A60 antibody assay appears to be a good serological marker available today for pulmonary tuberculosis and a supportive marker for neurotuberculosis. 相似文献

Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death in women. The incidence of this malignancy increases in women over the
age of 40. The overall five years survival is less than 30%, as most women present with advanced stage disease. Until recently,
detection of early stage ovarian cancer has been difficult since it is usually nonpalpable and asymptomatic. The definitive
diagnosis of an ovarian mass is a common problem in gynecologic patients with adnexal mass. The routine standard evaluation
for adnexal masses includes patient's history, physical examination, ultrasound and histopathological examination. These parameters
individually or in combination have little predictive value. The accuracy of diagnostic tools are of immense value and great
concern to practicsing Gynecologists and Oncologists. The clinical application of serum concentration of CA 125, AFP and hCG
is of great help not only as diagnostic aid but also in monitoring efficacy of any treatment modality like chemotherapy, radiotherapy
or surgical resection. Additionally, evaluation of tumor marker concentration helps in predicting early biochemical recurrence
and in prognostication in different types of ovarian malignancies. The ability to differentiate a malignant mass from a benign
pelvic mass pretherapeutically could be enhanced optimally by additional use of tumor markers such as cancer antigen CA-125,
alphafetoprotein and human chorionic gonadotrophin in pre-and postmenopausal women. 相似文献

Free radical generation and lipid peroxidation among the dry cell industry workers exposed to carbon

A total of 75 healthy male dry cell industry workers exposed to carbon for 5, 8 and 10 years were compared with 48 controls
matched for age and economic status with respect to free radical generation, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant levels. Lymphocytes
were seperated from the whole blood and used for estimation of free radicals and antioxidants. Plasma lipid peroxidation products
were estimated in the form of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Significant increase in free radical generation and
lipid peroxidation products were observed in carbon exposed population than controls, and the increase was found to be significant
with increase in the period of exposure. The levels of antioxidants i.e., superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase were found
to decrease with the increase in exposure to carbon in industrial workers. These results suggest that exposure to carbon augments
free radical generation, lipid peroxidation and promotes decline in antioxidant enzymes. 相似文献

We have developed a biostrip for determination of urea in serum. The test strip is based on enzymatic assay where urease has
been immobilized on the chromatographic paper along with chromogen, phenol red. The chromogen is easily soluble in water and
does not require other components for the color change. Serum urea reacts with urease and water to liberate ammonia and carbon
dioxide. The liberated ammonia changes the pH of the reaction medium, which is monitored by the chromogen phenol red. A single
step working reagent strip has been developed and the reaction is completed within 50 seconds at room temperature. With this
test strip urea concentration is measured in serum as low as 0.15 g/L. The speed and convenience of determining urea in serum
by this strip instantly makes it well suited for individuals, physicians and emergency centres. 相似文献

Vitamin B12 deficiency has been reported in patients with Autoimmune thyroid disorders. However there is limited data on exact prevalence of low B12 and its correlation with anti-thyroperoxidase antibody (anti-TPO) levels in these patients. The aim of our study was to estimate serum vitamin B12 levels in autoimmune thyroid disorders and to correlate B12 levels with anti-TPO. 350 patients were selected by convenient sampling. Vitamin B12 levels and thyroid parameters were estimated using fully automated chemiluminescence method on Access 2. Results of our study shows that using the manufacturer’s cut-off of 145 pg/mL, the prevalence of low serum vitamin B12 was found to be 45.50 %. Higher prevalence (55 %) was seen based on the published cut-off of 200 pg/mL The study however did not demonstrate any significant correlation between vitamin B12 levels and anti-TPO (r = −0.11 and p value of 0.30).

Dietary and lifestyle factors have been shown to have a profound effect on paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity. Cigarette smoke has been shown to inhibit its mass and activity where as resveratrol has been shown to enhance it. We exposed hepatoma derived cell line (HepG2) to resveratrol and nicotine in varying doses and measured PON1 enzymatic activity and PON1 gene expression. In addition, total protein content of HepG2 cells was also measured. Resveratrol in a dose of 15 μmol/l or above significantly increased the PON1 enzyme activity (p > 0.001) where as nicotine in a dose of 1 μmol/l or higher significantly reduced it (p < 0.05). The resveratrol in this dose also enhanced the PON1 gene expression whereas nicotine decreased it as compared to controls. However, the protein conent of cells was not changed suggesting that they were not cytotoxic in the doses used. Till date the antioxidant vitamins have shown disappointing results against LDL oxidation and cardiovascular protection. However, the effect of resveratrol on PON1 gene expression and activity was significant, suggesting increase in PON1 activity and enhanced gene expression may be its alternative mechanism for offering protection against cardiovascular disease and may be an potential pharmacological agent which can be used for this. 相似文献

The present study investigated the antecedents and consequences of children’s math anxiety and math attitude. A total of 595 students aged 10 to 15 years (5th to 10th grades) and 1 parent of each (mother or father) participated in the study. The study was conducted in India, with the study sample drawn from schools in South-West Punjab. Math anxiety of parents and their children was measured using the Mathematics Anxiety Scale Short Version (MARS-SV), the Mathematics Anxiety Scale for Elementary School Students (MARS-E), and the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale for Adolescents (MARS-A). Math attitude was assessed with the Attitude Towards Mathematics Inventory (ATMI). A math achievement test was constructed for each grade level based on their curriculum. Path analyses were conducted to test the suggested conceptual model, and the results indicate that parental math anxiety and math attitude act as precursors to their children’s math anxiety and math attitude and further influence the math achievement of their children. 相似文献
