Researchers who have investigated the public understanding of science have argued that fictional cinema and television has proven to be particularly effective at blurring the distinction between fact and fiction. The rationale for this study lies in the notion that to teach science effectively, educators need to understand how popular culture influences their students’ perception and understanding of science. Using naturalistic research methods in a diverse middle school we found that students who watched a popular science fiction film, The Core, had a number of misunderstandings of earth science concepts when compared to students who did not watch the movie. We found that a single viewing of a science fiction film can negatively impact student ideas regarding scientific phenomena. Specifically, we found that the film leveraged the scientific authority of the main character, coupled with scientifically correct explanations of some basic earth science, to create a series of plausible, albeit unscientific, ideas that made sense to students. 相似文献

The field of special education has primary responsibility for providing specialized services to young children with disabilities
in the schools. Increasingly, it is recognized that many disabilities identified among young children may be attributable
to environmental variables, such as violence, poverty, toxic materials exposure, and family dysfunction. Issues of violence
hold particular relevance for special education professionals. Recent studies report that young children with disabilities
are 1.7 times more likely to be victims of maltreatment than children without disabilities. For children with disabilities
living with the effects of violence, the infrastructure of special education as it is now developing may be the most promising
approach to individual and systems intervention. Comprehensive community-based initiatives are replacing fragmented practices.
The new collaborations can multiply the results of intervention or support programs beyond those attainable through any single
approach.

Our aims were to improve our understanding of human performance before 1850 and to put nineteenth- and twentieth-century performances into a broader historical context. Consequently, 536 foot-races performed in Britain in the 'long' eighteenth century were identified, 53 of which were analysed in detail. The best performances at the end of the eighteenth century were compared with those at the end of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The data for the nineteenth century were marginally better than those for the eighteenth century up to 20 km, but beyond that Thomas Carlisle's time, set in about 1740, of 2 hours for 21 miles was outstanding. Current records are shown to be better than earlier records at all distances from 5 km up to the marathon, the superiority being most pronounced from 15 km upwards. 相似文献

Using mathematical analysis, we examined the three baton exchanges that occur during a 4×100 m relay. Identical representative 100 m running performances were assumed for each of four elite male athletes, and the calculations were made for optimal or near-optimal positions of the baton exchanges and starting positions of the athletes running the second, third and fourth legs as determined by Ward-Smith and Radford (2002). In this paper, we focus on the calculation of the checkmark position and demonstrate the complexity of the baton exchange process. The results of the mathematical analysis show that, for optimal performance, the checkmark should be located differently for each of the three exchanges in a single race, and is further affected by lane draw and free distance (the distance between the runners at the baton exchange). For a representative free distance of 1 m at each exchange, the checkmark distance ranges from a minimum of 11.04 m at the third exchange in Lane 1 to 12.20 m for the first exchange in Lane 8. Failure by teams and their coaches to consider adequately the complexities of the baton exchanges may help explain why 25.5% of teams in recent World Championships were disqualified or did not finish. 相似文献

This study investigates how the enactment of a climate change curriculum supports students’ development of critical science
agency, which includes students developing deep understandings of science concepts and the ability to take action at the individual
and community levels. We examined the impact of a four to six week urban ecology curriculum on students from three different
urban high schools in the USA. Data collection included pre and posttest written assessments from all students (n = 75) and pre and post interviews from focal students (n = 22) to examine how students’ conceptual understandings, beliefs and environmental actions changed. Our analyses showed
that at the beginning of the curriculum, the majority of students believed that climate change was occurring; yet, they had
limited conceptual understandings about climate change and were engaged in limited environmental actions. By the end of the
curriculum, students had a significant increase in their understanding of climate change and the majority of students reported
they were now engaged in actions to limit their personal impact on climate change. These findings suggest that believing a
scientific theory (e.g. climate change) is not sufficient for critical science agency; rather, conceptual understandings and
understandings of personal actions impact students’ choices. We recommend that future climate change curriculum focus on supporting
students’ development of critical science agency by addressing common student misconceptions and by focusing on how students’
actions can have significant impacts on the environment. 相似文献

This article focuses on a crucial development in genetic research that occurred in the 1990s: the identification of the first two of the genes responsible for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (BRCA1 and BRCA2). Issues addressed touch on the evolution of the subfield, its potential impact on cancer treatment, and industry involvement. The article follows the activities of the various research groups competing in the race to identify the genes and depicts the frequent conflicts between them. Data are derived chiefly from a bibliometric database. The results show a diversity of research practices. Industrial researchers interacted within far more tightly knit networks than their counterparts working in public organizations. The patenting and commercial exploitation of results led to fierce battles, with one group capturing most of the benefits. 相似文献
