In this study, we examine the nature and quality of students' comprehension of history. Specifically, we explore whether cognitive-psychological theories developed to capture the comprehension of narrative text can be used to capture the comprehension of history. Participants were 36 students with learning disabilities who had taken part in an earlier study designed to investigate the effects of an interactive instructional intervention in history. The results of the original study supported the effectiveness of the intervention in terms of amount recalled. The results of the present study reveal that historical understanding can be characterized as the construction of meaning through the creation of a causal network of events. The study of history within a causal network framework has implications for understanding the nature and quality of students' learning of history, and for potentially identifying sources of failure in learning. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe research and practice surrounding student service members/veterans has evolved over several decades. With a regeneration of veteran students’ enrollment, a need for increased attention to this special student population continues to be an institutional priority, especially for community colleges. The literature suggests that while greater attention has been paid to serving those that have served, there is little to support whether or not such efforts are considered evidenced-based. This discussion asserts that community colleges are ripe with examples of evidenced-based programming for student service members and student veterans. 相似文献

Environmental management systems and technological environmental innovations: Exploring the causal relationship 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Within the discussion of voluntary proactive approaches to environmental protection, former micro-econometric studies analyze the causal effect of the adoption of environmental management systems (EMS) on technological environmental innovations and find some positive impacts. Based on empirical studies which consider the effect of general innovativeness on the adoption of voluntary environmental programs (VEP) as well as based on insights from the resource-based view of the firm, we contrarily hypothesize in this paper that EMS could also reversely be affected by environmental product or process innovations. This hypothesis is empirically examined with a unique firm-level data set from the German manufacturing sector. Our econometric analyses with uni- and multivariate probit models imply a significantly positive effect of environmental process innovations on certified EMS. According to this, the causal relationship between EMS and technological environmental innovations is obviously not clear. 相似文献
