Social Justice and Education as Discursive Initiation

In this essay Krassimir Stojanov attempts first to reconstruct the “heart” of Jürgen Habermas's discourse ethics, namely the so‐called “principle of universalization” of ethical norms. This principle grounds Habermas's proceduralist account of social justice via equal access of all concerned to the practices of deliberative validation of norms. Stojanov claims with regard to this account that it could only be implemented if the social actors are involved in a process of education as discursive initiation. After using R. S. Peters's educational theory to distinguish discursive initiation from a traditionalist understanding of educative initiation, he discusses some central social prerequisites for the development of discursive skills in growing individuals; to identify these prerequisites, he draws on Axel Honneth's conception of the intersubjective origins of individuals' development of rational autonomy. In the final part of the essay, Stojanov briefly explores some implications of his elaborated account of discursive initiation and its social preconditions for schooling and pedagogy.     

Facilitating self-directed learning (SDL) and satisfaction with SDL among pre-university students

The aim of the study was to evaluate our practice of self-directed learning (SDL) among pre-university students in Malaysia. Respondents provided data on their previous school learning experiences besides present SDL experiences in college. We carried out exploratory factor analysis based on the school data. We did a confirmatory factor analysis using College SDL experiences of students. Given high similarities between the measurement models, we decided to use the original structure of the instrument. Students provided feedback using a questionnaire based on Prociuk’s. A large majority declared that they needed SDL experiences which they lacked while at school. The study also showed that students had rated their SDL experiences in college more positively than in school, on four factors of SDL experiences. Pearson correlations showed that “knowledgeable and organised teachers” and “promotion of active learning” correlated significantly with students’ current satisfaction with SDL in college.     

Children's Ideals as a Philosophical Topic

Several decades ago psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut pointed out that ideals should be seen as a core dimension of the infantile personality — a dimension that is crucial for the self's formation and the flourishing of the self. In this essay, Krassimir Stojanov begins by reconstructing Kohut's conception of children's ideals, and then, drawing on Axel Honneth's philosophical conception of intersubjective recognition, he explicates the social and pedagogical prerequisites for the formation of ideals and their transformation into values. According to Honneth's conception, the emergence and development of a coherent, autonomous self depend on various forms of intersubjective recognition, specifically empathy, cognitive respect, and social esteem. One of Stojanov's central claims here is that the educational practice of philosophizing with children is probably best equipped to provide children and adolescents with those experiences of intersubjective recognition that enable the articulation of infantile ideals and the transformation of those ideals into values. This practice is essential to development of the self because these articulations and transformations are basic preconditions for living a free and autonomous human life. Moreover, this practice is also important to the “rechilding” of philosophy — that is, the process of revitalizing philosophy through getting in touch with children's ideals. Thus, Stojanov concludes, these ideals deserve social esteem precisely because of their childish character.     

X-linked adreno leukodistrophy: Profiles of very long chain fatty acids in plasma and fibroblasts in eigth Serbian patients

X-linked adrenoleukodistrophy is a severe neurodegenerative disorder with impaired very long chain fatty acid metabolism. The disease associated ABCD1 gene encodes a peroxisomal membrane protein which belongs to the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette transporters. We investigated eight male X-ALD patients diagnosed among 142 suspected patients referred for investigation. Plasma levels of very long chain fatty acids were measured at our laboratory using capillary gas chromatography. Eight cases of childhood X-ALD were diagnosed. This is the first published series of Serbian patients with X-ALD. In addition, diagnosis identifies carriers, which could be benefit for genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis.     

Urinary catecholamine metabolites: Capillary gas chromatography method and experience with 12 cases of neuroblastoma

We propose a rapid, simple metodology for routine analysis of human urine to detect vanillylmandelic and homovanillic acid related to neuroblastoma. The assay were specific capillary gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. In this methodology an internal standard is used and the procedure involves ethyl ester formation without isolation of the compounds of interest. The run time is 36 minutes. We also report quantitative results for urinary vanillylmandelic and homovanillic acid in neuroblastoma patients, demonstrating the diagnostic value of this method.
