Ischemia modified albumin: A novel marker for acute coronary syndrome

Early identification of patients with acute myocardial infarction is of prime importance due to the associated very high mortality. Only 22% of the patients presenting at emergency cardiology care with chest pain have coronary disease. A number of biochemical tests like CKMB and Troponin-T/I have been introduced for early detection of the coronary syndrome (ACS). Ischemia modified albumin (IMA) has been recently introduced as a marker of myocardial ischemia. We estimated serum IMA in four sequential samples from 25 patients admitted to ICCU. Twenty five healthy volunteers formed the control group from which the normal range was derived. IMA was significantly raised in ischemia patients than in controls as well as compared to the patients who did not have cardiac ischemia. IMA demonstrated good discrimination between the ischemic and the non-ischemic patients with an Odds Ratio of 16.9 (6.29–46.87) than CKMB which showed an Odds Ratio of 2.07 (1.18–6.08). Sensitivity and specificity of IMA for the detection of ACS was 78.0% and 82.7% compared to 58.0% and 60.0%, respectively for the CK-MB assay. The area under the ROC curve of IMA for ischemic v/s non-ischemic patients was 0.834. IMA appears to be developing into a new and very potent marker, of cardiac ischemia.     

Risky business: Students and smartphones

The increase in smartphone adoption has been no less than astounding. Unfortunately, the explosive growth has been accompanied by a rash of security problems. A contributing factor to the growing security problem is a lack of education, training, and awareness. In addition, “bring your own device” (BYOD) policies often leave security responsibilities to the competencies of device owners, which compromises security. Today’s students are tomorrow’s employees with responsibilities for protecting their work environment. They need to understand and practice a full-range of mobile security practices so that they can safely access the information assets of their organizations. If students are not engaging in such practices, educational institutions have a responsibility to ensure that students understand how to keep information assets secure. This paper investigates the smartphone security practices of undergraduate college students. Five hundred students in business classes at a regional public university were surveyed to determine their use of recommended smartphone security practices. The study found that many smartphone users did employ some security measures, but a high percentage of them were ignoring potential risks. This suggests a need for increased education, training, and awareness.     

The generation and use of text fragments for data compression

An analysis of 31,369 bibliographic titles was carried out to obtain statistics on frequently occurring character groups to increase the effective character set with the aim of estimating possible compression factors for text. It was found that a common set could be used to obtain compression ranging between 30 and 53% over a wide variety of original text.     

Parathyroid and Calcium Status in Patients with Thalassemia

Thirty patients with thalassemia major receiving repeated blood transfusion were studied to see their serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium status. Serum PTH, serum and 24 h urinary calcium, and serum alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus, and albumin-corrected calcium levels were determined. Half of these patients, in addition to transfusion, were also supplemented with vitamin D (60,000 IU for 10d) and calcium (1500 mg/day for 3 months). Serum PTH, and serum and 24 h urinary calcium concentrations of the patients receiving transfusions were found to be significantly reduced while their serum alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus, and albumin-corrected calcium levels were not significantly altered when compared to the respective mean values for the control group. Vitamin D and calcium supplementation significantly increased their serum PTH and calcium levels. Supplementations also increased urinary excretion of calcium. The results thus suggest that patients with thalassemia have hypoparathyroidism and reduced serum calcium concentrations that in turn were improved with vitamin D and calcium supplementation.

Production of recombinant enveloped structural proteins from the Chinese WSSV isolate

The white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is one of the deadly pathogens of penaeid shrimps and other crustaceans. The WSSV virion consists of an enveloped rod-shaped nucleocapsid enclosing a large circular double stranded DNA genome of 305 Kb with 181 open reading frames. The two major structural genes, VP19 and VP28 were amplified from the genomic DNA of Chinese isolate of WSSV and cloned in pUCm-T vector and sub cloned in pET-30a (+) vector. The expressions of genes inE. coli (BL21) were confirmed by SDS-PAGE analysis. The clones were sequenced, submitted to the gene bank and the Xiang Shan strain of WSSV were compared with the previous reported sequence of WSSV of various regions which revealed that VP19 and VP28 gene sequences had certain differences from the sequences of similar genes of the isolate already reported. The recombinant proteins expressed, purified and characterized.     

A novel neighborhood based document smoothing model for information retrieval

In this paper, a novel neighborhood based document smoothing model for information retrieval has been proposed. Lexical association between terms is used to provide a context sensitive indexing weight to the document terms, i.e. the term weights are redistributed based on the lexical association with the context words. A generalized retrieval framework has been presented and it has been shown that the vector space model (VSM), divergence from randomness (DFR), Okapi Best Matching 25 (BM25) and the language model (LM) based retrieval frameworks are special cases of this generalized framework. Being proposed in the generalized retrieval framework, the neighborhood based document smoothing model is applicable to all the indexing models that use the term-document frequency scheme. The proposed smoothing model is as efficient as the baseline retrieval frameworks at runtime. Experiments over the TREC datasets show that the neighborhood based document smoothing model consistently improves the retrieval performance of VSM, DFR, BM25 and LM and the improvements are statistically significant.     

Use of Internet services and resources in the engineering colleges of Punjab and Haryana (India): A study

This article reports a survey on the use of Internet services and resources in the engineering colleges of Punjab and Haryana states of India. Data were collected by using a questionnaire and follow-up interviews with Internet users, i.e. teachers and students of engineering colleges. The response rate was 80.8%. Results showed that all the respondents make frequent use of the Internet because they have access either at college or at home. The survey revealed that the majority of the respondents, i.e. 65.6%, access the Internet from college or their workplace. More than 75% of the respondents use the Internet services mainly for educational and research purposes. Google and Yahoo search engines are found to be more widely used than other search engines. More than 70% of the respondents feel that the Internet is useful, informative, easy to use, inexpensive and time saving.     

Estimation of plasma haemoglobin by a modified kinetic method using o-tolidine

Measurement of plasma hemoglobin is useful in variety of clinical conditions. In the present study we have developed a kinetic method to estimate plasma haemoglobin by using o-tolidine. This method is sensitive, rapid, economical, simple and less influenced by interfering substances. It measures plasma haemoglobin in the range of 6 to 400 mg/L (normal range < 50 mg/L) in less than two minutes and can be easily automated.     

Diagnostic Potential of Circulating Biomarkers in Adenosine Deaminase Diagnosed Pleural Tuberculosis Cases

Pleural tuberculosis accounts for nearly 20% of Extra pulmonary tuberculosis. Adenosine deaminase, commonly used biomarker for the diagnosis, is non specific and there is paucity of literature on its correlation with conventional or newer methods for the diagnosis of extra pulmonary forms of TB. The aim of the study was to assess diagnostic potential of T cell function markers [interferon (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL-2) and IFN-γ/IL-2 ratio]; macrophage activation marker [neopterin]; and oxidative stress markers [protein carbonyl and malondialdehyde (MDA)] in pleural tuberculosis. 26 pleural TB cases diagnosed on the basis of suggestive chest X-ray and raised serum ADA levels and healthy controls were included in the study. Pleural fluid specimens were subjected to Zeihl Neelsen staining and culture on Lowenstein Jensen medium. Serum IFN-γ, IL-2, neopterin and protein carbonyl levels detection were done by ELISA and MDA levels were determined by measuring the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Median serum levels of IFN-γ, IL-2, IFN-γ/IL-2 ratio, neopterin, protein carbonyl and MDA were significantly different between cases and controls. Levels of all biomarkers except IL-2 were significantly higher in cases with contact history. Mean levels of ADA and ESR were 46.27 U/L and 46.62 mm/hr in PTB cases. AUC for IFN-γ, IL-2, IFN-γ/IL-2 ratio, neopterin, protein carbonyl and MDA were significantly discriminative for cases and controls. IFN-γ/IL-2 ratio was best discriminatory biomarker with highest area under ROC curve. Though no correlation was seen between ADA and any of the six biomarkers, ESR levels correlated significantly with all biomarkers except IL-2 by spearman’s correlation coefficient. Though all the circulating biomarkers under study provide useful supportive evidence for the diagnosis of PTB, further studies involving diverse control groups particularly non-PTB effusion are needed to validate these results.
