Conceptual Mediation Program in Practice: Educational Outcomes from Two Sites

We report on two studies in which high school students who had been exposed to a cognitive training procedure known as the Conceptual Mediation Program (CMP) were compared to students who had not participated within the program. In the first study, based on data from two sites, it was found that 70 CMP students exhibited higher levels of school affect and strategy awareness than 103 comparable students not in the program. In the second study, based on retrospective data from one site, 53 students who had participated within CMP classes were found to exhibit higher levels of attainment on Year 12 South Australian public examination results (effect size of 1.04 on the aggregate). On the Year 12 examination results, the CMP students outperformed both the school and state norms.     

A study in international communication: Eurovision

Of all the efforts to improve international understanding, perhaps the most noteworthy is the expansion of television to the international sphere in the form of Eurovision.     

Web-Based Research Ethics Training for Gerontologists

As part of a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR)-funded Strategic Training Grant, we have developed and delivered a brief course in research ethics directed toward postgraduate students in experimental gerontology. In this paper, we report on the initial offering, its content and delivery, and student reactions to the course. We conclude with some thoughts for others who wish to develop and evaluate similar courses in the future.     

The evolution of Web‐based peer‐review systems

Web‐based peer‐review systems are ubiquitous within scholarly publishing today, providing valuable efficiencies for authors, editors, and referees. These systems are the result of a general evolution from paper‐based workflows to electronic processes that began in the 1970s. DOS‐based systems paved the way for Windows desktop systems and, in the mid‐1990s, Web‐based peer review. Governmental, academic, and commercial stakeholders all participated in advancing the state of peer review by experimenting with different technologies, workflows, and features. These experiments have coalesced into a new steady state in which Web‐based peer‐review systems are the norm, and in which continued evolution tends to focus on incremental improvements to traditional workflow.     

The Equation, the Whole Equation and Nothing But the Equation! One Approach to the Teaching of Linear Equations

There exists an extensive range of research looking at the teaching and learning of linear equations, resulting in many papers highlighting a range of teaching approaches and illustrating a variety of significant cognitive problems and stumbling blocks to the learning of linear equations with understanding. Building on this literature, this paper presents some of the results of a case study which looked at the mathematics classroom of one particular teacher, Alwyn, trying to teach mathematics with meaning to less able pupils at secondary school level. Our interest here is those lessons which dealt specifically with the learning of linear equations, in which firstly a different approach was utilised and secondly many of the problems referred to in the literature were not present. We contrast this method with the teaching of linear equations to a variety of ability levels in several other classrooms that we have studied and we attempt through use of the Pirie-Kieren model, to analyse and account for the successful growth of understanding of the lower ability, year eight pupils in one particular classroom.
