A Corpus-based Contrastive Study of Semantic Prosodies of English Near Synonyms

This research compares and contrasts the semantic prosody of three sets of near synonyms between native corpus and learner corpus by date-based and data-driven approach. The study shows that the Chinese learners tend to use these near synonyms in similar context with similar semantic prosody. It suggests that the Chinese learners fail to recognize the pragmatic distinction between the near synonyms.
