The present paper is divided into eight sections:introduction,the global diffusion of English,perceptions of the new varieties,the issue of intelligibility,features that cause unintelligibility,need for a broader pragmatics,and pedagogical impli- cations,and conclusion,followed by the references.Not surprisingly,the global spread of English has generated varying perspec- tives on the nature and functions of its acculturated varieties.Broadly speaking,the debate has divided scholars into two camps holding diametrically opposing views on the multiple versions of English.On the one hand,some scholars view variations as symp- toms of linguistic degeneration and deterioration;on the other hand,some scholars legitimize them as inevitable manifestations ne- cessitated by the demands of the new cultural contexts.The normative view of the former camp stems,at least partly,from the problems the new forms of English pose in terms of international intelligibility.It is in this context that the paper examines the traditional,one-sided,native speaker-centred idea of intelligibility and the recent two-sided view of intelligibility that places the onus on both the native speaker and the non-native speaker.The argument of the latter camp is based on the premise that the new varieties require a broader pragmatic framework,because universal pragmatics is inadequate to describe them satisfactorily. Thus,the camp advocates a need for a language specific pragmatics,and a comparative pragmatics,in addition to the traditional universal pragmatics.Logically,the debate on phonological,lexical,grammatical,and discourse structure variations,and their le- gitimacy has prompted English language teaching specialists to have a fresh look at the goals and objectives of teaching English in the countries of the outer and expanding circles,and accordingly prioritize the teaching of national and regional varieties over that of the so-called native varieties.Thus,the paradigms of independence and centrality of the new varieties are replacing the paradigms of their dependence and marginality. 相似文献

Pleurotus sajor-caju (Fr.) Singer was cultivated on selected agro wastes viz. cotton stalks, groundnut haulms, soybean straw, pigeon pea stalks and leaves and wheat straw, alone or in combinations. Cotton stalks, pigeon pea stalks and wheat straw alone or in combination were found to be more suitable than groundnut haulms and soybean straw for the cultivation. Organic supplements such as groundnut oilseed cake, gram powder and rice bran not only affected growth parameters but also increased yields. Thus bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass by P. sajor-caju offers a promising way to convert low quality biomass into an improved human food. 相似文献

The present study was undertaken in 100 subjects, 30 diabetics without complication (group I), 40 diabetics with retinopathy
(group II) and 30 non diabetic as normal control group (group III). Blood sugar levels, magnesium, cholesterol and triglyceride
were analyzed from plasma and serum. The results were correlated with degree of diabetic control from the levels of glycosylated
hemoglobin. Serum magnesium levels in group II were found to be significantly lowered than in group I. There was also significant
difference in magnesium levels of group I and group III. We found a significant correlation between the glycosylated hemoglobin
and magnesium levels in our study.
The results also indicate that the patients with diabetic retinopathy showed significant rise in serum cholesterol and triglyceride.
Probably hypomagnesemia and increased serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels are responsible for microvascular changes
in diabetes leading to retinopathy. The purpose of this study was thus to gather information about the degree of control of
diabetes and magnesium status. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: An evaluation of interactive video conferencing and Web-assisted instruction to deliver a multidisciplinary course entitled Phytochemicals in Fruits and Vegetables to Improve Human Health was conducted during the spring semesters of 1999 and 2001. This course was taught by 20 instructors from 11 institutions to 49 students during spring 2001, which was an increase of 53% over spring 1999. Weekly 3-h lectures were delivered by the Trans-Texas Videoconference Network integrated with PowerPoint® or HTML slides available on the course Web site ( http://phytochemicals.tamu.edu ). Qualitative and quantitative data were collected through formative and summative methods. Participants expressed their satisfaction with course format and the need for technical support for interactive videoconferencing. 相似文献

HIV-infected adults may be likely to have metabolic syndrome (MS) at younger ages and in the absence of obesity compared with general population. In the present study, we determined prevalence of MS and its association with oxidative deoxy nucleic acid (DNA) damage in HIV-1 infected patients with different ART status. We used plasma level of the oxidized base, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), as a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage. To measure plasma 8-OHdG we used 8-OHdG enzyme-linked, immunosorbent assay. The biomarkers of MS were insulin resistance, Cholesterol/HDL ratio, Waist circumference and Hypertension. MS and oxidative DNA damage were significantly higher in HIV-positive patients with second line ART and first line ART than ART-naive patients. In a logistic regression analysis, increased MS was positively associated with the increased DNA damage (OR: 29.68, 95%:13.47, CI: 65.40) P = 0.0001. ART plays a significant role in the development of MS and oxidative DNA damage in HIV-positive patients taking antiretroviral therapy. Awareness and knowledge of MS and DNA damage in HIV/AIDS patients may prove helpful to clinicians to manage non-AIDS diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. To determine exact role of ART in induction of MS and DNA damage larger studies are warranted. 相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to ascertain the variations in the serum levels of malondialdehyde and total antioxidant
status, in head and neck malignancies with different stages, with and without oral antioxidant supplementation, before and
after radiotherapy, and to validate the protective effects of an antioxidant supplementation during radiotherapy. The pretreatment
values of serum malondialdehyde were significantly raised, while that of serum total antioxidant status were significantly
declined in all the stages of head and neck malignancies, when compared with the healthy controls values (P<0.001). A significant
correlation was observed related to the studied parameters and different stages of the disease. The study suggests that an
oral antioxidant supplementation during radiotherapy is an effective mode in reducing oxidative stress. Antioxidant supplementation
during radiotherapy may serve as an adjuvant therapy in malignancies offering a protection to normal cells that may further
reduce the risk of developing secondary cancers. 相似文献

Hemodialysis represents a chronic stress status for its recipients. Many hypotheses state that this may be associated with
oxidative stress. Thus, there may be deficiency of antioxidants like erythrocytic superoxide dismutase, catalase, vitamin
E or increased generation of free radicals like superoxide anions. A study was carried out to investigate oxidant and antioxidant
status in chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis and effect of vitamin E supplementation on these two status.
Blood samples were collected from patients before and after hemodialysis and from controls. The samples were analyzed for
quantitation of MDA as index of lipid peroxide, nitric oxide, vitamin E, vitamin C and enzymatic antioxidants namely erythrocyte
SOD and catalase. As compared to controls, the levels of serum MDA were significantly increased and activities of erythrocyte
SOD and catalase, levels of serum nitric oxide, serum vitamin E and plasma vitamin C were significantly decreased both before
and after hemodialysis. The efficiency of vitamin E therapy in hemodialysis patients was assessed by re-evaluating oxidant
and antioxidant status of same patients after supplementation of vitamin E. Vitamin E supplementation caused decrease in serum
MDA and increase in levels of serum nitric oxide, vitamin E, vitamin C and activities of erythrocytic SOD and catalase. Our
results suggest the presence of oxidative stress and the possible preventive role of vitamin E therapy in hemodialysis patients. 相似文献

The awareness of osteoporosis has grown world wide in recent years. This silently progressing metabolic bone disease is widely
prevalent in India, and osteoporotic fractures are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in adult Indian men and women.
Rapid bone loss occurs in postmenopausal women due to hormonal factors which lead to increased risk of fractures. Biochemical
markers of bone metabolism are used to assess skeletal turnover. A cross-sectional study of 150 pre- and post menopausal women
was carried out at S.D.M College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Dharwad, during the period of May 2005 to September 2005.
The study group consisted of 75 Premenopausal women in the age group of 25–45 years and 75 Postmenopausal women in the age
group of 46–65 years. Bone formation markers (Total Calcium, lonised calcium, Phosphorus, Alkaline phosphatase), and bone
resorption markers (Urinary Hydroxyproline) were analysed in pre and post menopausal women. Bone formation markers, Total
and lonised calcium were significantly decreased (p<0.001) and Alkaline phosphatase was significantly increased (p<0.001)
in postmenopausal women compared to premenopausal women. Bone resorption markers, Urinary hydroxyproline excretion was significantly
increased (p<0.001) in postmenopausal women. The results from this study suggest that simple, easy, common biochemical markers
can still be used to assess the bone turnover in postmenopausal women and hence their risk of developing osteoporosis and

Vitamin B12 deficiency has been reported in patients with Autoimmune thyroid disorders. However there is limited data on exact prevalence of low B12 and its correlation with anti-thyroperoxidase antibody (anti-TPO) levels in these patients. The aim of our study was to estimate serum vitamin B12 levels in autoimmune thyroid disorders and to correlate B12 levels with anti-TPO. 350 patients were selected by convenient sampling. Vitamin B12 levels and thyroid parameters were estimated using fully automated chemiluminescence method on Access 2. Results of our study shows that using the manufacturer’s cut-off of 145 pg/mL, the prevalence of low serum vitamin B12 was found to be 45.50 %. Higher prevalence (55 %) was seen based on the published cut-off of 200 pg/mL The study however did not demonstrate any significant correlation between vitamin B12 levels and anti-TPO (r = −0.11 and p value of 0.30).
