Reliability Management and Education in Manufacturing Industries

A good reliability management (RM) and education system is a key factor for total quality management (TQM) in a manufacturing industry. In this paper, how to construct a good RM system is discussed, and how to practise it efficiently. Also, the contribution of RM to TQM is explained. The RM consists of reliability policy, maintenance programme of equipment, optimization of equipment reliability, continuous effort for reliability improvement, small-group activity to enhance reliability, reliability education, information system for reliability, company organization for reliability, etc. A typical education programme for RM is presented. There is no doubt that a good manufacturing company should have a sound RM. Also, to have excellent TQM it is essential to have a good statistical process control (SPC) system and a good quality engineering (QE) system in addition to a good RM system. The relationships of RM, SPC and QE for TQM are also described.

Time domain system identification of unknown initial conditions

System identification is a method for using measured data to create or improve a mathematical model of the object being tested. From the measured data however, noise is noticed at the beginning of the response. One solution to avoid this noise problem is to skip the noisy data and then use the initial conditions as active parameters, to be found by using the system identification process. This paper describes the development of the equations for setting up the initial conditions as active parameters. The simulated data and response data from actual shear buildings were used to prove the accuracy of both the algorithm and the computer program, which include the initial conditions as active parameters. The numerical and experimental model analysis showed that the value of mass, stiffness and frequency were very reasonable and that the computed acceleration and measured acceleration matched very well.
