Faculty uses of doctoral training: Consideration of a technique for the differentiation of scholarly effort from research activity 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The purposes of this study are: (1) to differentiate scholarly effort from research activity, and (2) to test the notion that publications are a discrete measure of scholarly performance. Validity was established for 71 scholarly activities apart from publications; these were classified into two domains: the external-disciplinary colleague (EDC) and the institutional local-community (ILC). A mailed survey of a sample of PhD recipients in chemistry and psychology at 44 liberal arts colleges—Selectivity I yielded a 63% useable return on 186 respondents. High and low publishers (career and current) were compared on both EDC and ILC Domain performance. Findings were that high publishers (career and current) have higher levels of performance in both Domains than do low publishers (career and current). An earlier version of this paper was presented at the twentieth Annual Forum of the Association for Institutional Research, Atlanta, April 1980. 相似文献

Relationships between graduate education and academic research are intuitively accepted, but have been given limited examination. Using concepts suggested by Merton and Hagstrom, this study developed measures of recognition and association to assess student awareness of ambient research in their departments. Usefulness of campus research for the respondent's own work was explored in terms of the kinds of utility and its relative importance compared to other resources. A mailed survey of a sample of Ph.D. recipients in 18 departments from a major research university brought a 68% usable return, 470 subjects. Findings show a high level of research awareness, about 70%. The major utilities of research for doctoral students are identified as the theoretical leads and basic data sources. 相似文献

New functions in the university often begin as satellites, marginal to the core of the academic disciplines and the faculty. With success they seek to institutionalize those functions sometimes by incorporating them into the faculty role pattern. This study examined the receptivity across a university faculty to the role changes associated with continuing education for established professionals. Working with mid-career practitioners may offer an unusual degree of intellectual stimulus and affinity to faculty members. Respondents evaluated the importance of a set of role behaviors, some traditional, some new. Application of multiple discriminant analysis to these ratings identified agreement on several basic values along with four subcultural groupings based on views of applied knowledge and the degree of relationship to an established profession. 相似文献

Policy deliberations within the university frequently require information useful in shaping discussion and pointing up priorities. Research work among faculty and graduate students often includes data about alumni, students, or staff gathered to answer theoretical questions. This study reports one effort to translate such data into forms useful to the College of Liberal Arts in creating academic policy to meet the altered job market. Organized around the concepts of jobentry, decisions, andchanges in goals, jobs, and majors, the analysis revealed the urgency of the issue, the importance of a satisfaction on the first job, a changing relationship between jobs and majors, the impact of the liberal arts' study on educational aspirations, and the rationale for choices. 相似文献
