This study investigated the effects of search tools and learner cognitive styles on performance in searches for information within a hypermedia database. Seventy-five students in a university English as a Second Language (ESL) program were blocked for field dependence and assigned to one of four treatments: browser, index/find, map, and all tools. Subjects searched the hypermedia database, EarthQuest, for facts to answer practice and posttest questions on science topics. Results revealed a significant interaction between search tool and cognitive style. Field-independent learners performed significantly better than field-dependent learners under the index/find and map treatments. Subjects in the four treatment groups accessed information from the database differently. Furthermore, cognitive style was significantly related to achievement, tool use, and attitude. Implications for the design and instructional use of hypermedia databases are provided. 相似文献

This study examined the effects of program mode (i.e., a lean program version containing a basic amount of learner practice
vs. a full mode containing expanded practice) and learner preference (matched or unmatched) for amount of practice on the
achievement, time-in-program, and attitudes of university undergraduate students. Subjects completed a 10-item Likert-type
prequestionnaire to indicate the amount of practice they preferred, then were randomly assigned to either the type of program
they preferred or to the opposite type. Subjects who used the full version of the instructional program scored significantly
higher on the posttest than those who used the lean version. Matching subjects to their preferred amount of practice did not
yield a significant achievement difference over assigning subjects to their less-preferred amount. Subjects preferred the
lean version of the program over the full one, even though the full version produced better test performance. 相似文献

Control of pigeons’ keypecking by conditionalities in the spatial arrangement of two element stimuli (designated A and B) was investigated. In Experiment 1, reinforcement for keypecking was made conditional upon the left-right location of A and B: Reinforcement was available when A was on the left and B was on the right (AB), but not on BA, AA, or BB trials. The pigeons successfully discriminated the rewarded AB configuration, but only after a stage in which a particular element in a particular location (e.g., A on left) primarily controlled pecking. Experiments 2 and 3 systematically replicated these findings and included controls to discount discrimination of the AB compound on the basis of the temporal order (e.g., A followed by B) rather than the spatial configuration of the elements. During a generalization test in Experiment 4, the elements were presented singly either in the left (AX, BX) or right (XA, XB) positions. As would be expected had the animals learned “A on the left, B on the right is rewarded,” responding on AX trials exceeded that on XA trials, and responding on XB trials exceeded that on BX trials. 相似文献
