Use of clustering techniques in deriving psychoeducational profiles

This study explores whether a synthesis of clinical and statistical data taken from the psychoeducational reports completed on a group of 42, 9- to 11-year-old boys referred to a Child Psychiatric Outpatient Department for school-learning problems, would yield discrete clinical categories or clusters of children. An amalgamated hierarchical clustering technique which formed clusters by subjects based on a measure of euclidean distance was used. Forty-two reports were evaluated by licensed educational psychologists in five input areas: Developmental History, School History, Cognitive Functioning, Sensorimotor/Perceptual Functioning, and Academic Achievement. One of three educational placement recommendations was identified for each subject: No Educational Placement Intervention Necessary, Special Tutoring or Remediation, and Special Class Placement. Using clinical characteristic ratings given by the evaluators on each variable, a similarity-dissimilarity matrix was formed which classified subjects into four discrete clusters based on their clinical profiles. A χ² test determined that there was a significant association (p < .01) between cluster membership and educational placement recommendations.

伊拉·凯勒水景广场是由二战后美国著名的风景园林设计师——劳伦斯·哈普林及其设计团队为波特兰市设计的一系列广场和绿地的第三站,也是整个系列的高潮。设计中依据劳伦斯对美国西部自然山地与溪流的体验与研究,成功将人工化的自然要素融入到城市环境中。场地设计很大程度上体现了让市民主动使用和参与而不是仅仅作为被动者去观赏的设计思想。     

Haunting Argentina: Synecdoche in the protests of the mothers of the Plaza de Mayo

Since April, 1977, Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires have marched every Thursday at 3:30, demanding information about their disappeared children. In this essay, we analyze the protests of the Mothers by means of the metaphor of haunting and suggest that their symbols‐diapers as kerchiefs, slogans and sayings, circling the plaza, and marches‐enact a haunting by means of synecdoche. Synecdoche allows the Mothers to manage the trauma of the disappeared but is less effective at generating ways for Argentina to move out of the limbo of the disappearances.

Democracy Plaza: A Campus Space for Civic Engagement

This article examines “Democracy Plaza,” a campus space dedicated to written and spoken communication about issues of public concern. The Plaza gives students opportunities to become civically engaged through self-expression and the exchange of ideas. A series of chalkboards on the Plaza allows them to write their thoughts and read the comments of others, and events where students can speak and deliberate about important civic matters are hosted in this space. This article discusses the concept of Democracy Plaza and its development, maintenance, and utilization as a campus space for civic engagement. Johnny Goldfinger is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. He received a B.S.Ch.E. and B.A. from the University of South Alabama, the M.A. in political science from the University of New Orleans, and the Ph.D. in political science from Duke University. His research interests include political deliberation, democratic decision-making, and civic engagement.
