The influence of cultural blogs on their readers’ cultural product choices

While some conceptual studies have highlighted the impact that Web 2.0 technology and social media have on cultural industries, empirical evidence is still missing. Specifically, no study has considered the role of cultural bloggers, who mediate the information flows from cultural organizations to consumers. To fill this gap, this paper suggests and tests a model that explains blog readers’ intentions to consume cultural products suggested by the blog. The findings from a sample of 215 cultural blog readers show that the impact of the blog on reader intention to consume the products suggested by the blog is strongly influenced by reader engagement with the blog. In addition, the results highlight the effects of content quality, enjoyment, and homophily. The implications of these findings for bloggers and for organizations communicating through bloggers are discussed in detail.

The authors review the system for the acquisition and distribution of the foreign literature required by Soviet and Russian institutions of higher education for the period from 1989 to 1995. As Russia moves toward a democratic society, a centralized system designed for total State control is no longer capable of serving all the libraries in higher education institutions.

Web 2.0 Support for Residents' and Fellows' Patient Care and Educational Needs

This article discusses librarian support of medical education programs and patient care with blogs and wikis. Pedagogical background for using Web 2.0 tools in educational settings is explored and example applications given. A survey of health sciences libraries usage of blogs and wikis was conducted in 2009–2010. Using the results from the survey plus five years of experience using blogs and wikis at the University of Washington Health Sciences Library, best practices were compiled and are presented for guidance in establishing new blogs and wikis.     

Twenty Steps to Marketing Your Library Online

ABSTRACT

Libraries are quite practiced at outreach activities in the physical world, but now, just as our services and resources have moved online, so must our outreach efforts. This article provides a list of twenty practical things libraries can do to begin to delve into the world of online outreach. Topics covered include listing your library in Wikipedia, listing library events in local community calendars, listing librarians in expert-finding directories, pushing newsletters out via RSS, being present in online game and other environments, and much more. The requirements for online outreach at libraries will always be evolving, but this starter list will provide a place for all libraries to begin their foray into online outreach and marketing.

This paper was presented during the “Making Information Pay 2008” conference organized by the Book Industry Study Group, as a different kind of text as far as I am concerned than an essay. What I actually said the day of the presentation was undoubtedly somewhat different than what is written here.

One difference between blogs and traditional print columns is that blogs often create a sense of community among readers, while also helping readers in the task of self-definition. Columns seldom do these things, but do offer some writers a medium to develop over time a distinctive voice and point of view. Molly Ivins, the late political columnist, was one example.     

Using ProQuest Statistics as an Aid in Collection Development

This workshop provided an overview of using UMI's ProQuest statistics to measure journal use at Loyola University in New Orleans. The workshop demonstrated steps involved in gathering statistics and converting them to spreadsheets and it discussed how the resulting information can be used to assist collection development decisions.
