Brian Griffiths (1927–2008) – his pioneering contributions to mathematics and education

Brian Griffiths (1927–2008) was a British mathematician and educator who served as a member of the founding editorial board of Educational Studies in Mathematics. As a mathematician, Griffiths is remembered through his work on what continue to be known as ‘Griffiths-type’ topological spaces. As a mathematics educator, his most profound contribution was, with Geoffrey Howson, in offering a conceptualisation of the relationship between mathematics, society and curricula.     

Gross Intrusions

This essay closely analyzes the 1936 British film Sensation, directed by the eccentric queer filmmaker Brian Desmond Hurst. The film participated in an extensive and heated debate about intrusive and ‘sensational’ press practices that erupted in the 1930s. In his cinematic version of events, Hurst made sensational journalism seem like an exciting, if morally dubious, part of modern life—a news form that satisfied a basic human desire to learn about the private lives and hidden secrets of other people. This essay shows how Sensation, in its ambivalent relationship to this fraught cultural issue, reveals some of the complexities of interpreting queer filmmaking before the advent of a self-aware and politicized ‘queer film.’ It argues that intrusive journalism was of interest to Hurst precisely because it engaged with issues at the core of queer identity—exposure, revelation, privacy, and criminality—before the decriminalization of homosexual acts.     

A Case Study in Indigenous Classification: Revisiting and Reviving the Brian Deer Scheme

It is a challenge to classify Indigenous knowledge using conventional library classification systems. An interconnected network of information and ideas needs to be classified in a way that adds structure, but also demonstrates relationships and offers some flexibility. Kahnawake librarian Brian Deer developed a classification system that better reflects an Indigenous worldview and the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs Resource Centre recently released a new revision of this system. Implementing this new system was a project that produced a model and tools, as well as inspiration that other institutions can use to move toward more culturally appropriate classification.     

Effect of diet oils on lipid levels of the brain of rats

The effects of sunflower oil, olive oil, margarine, soybean oil and butter on cholesterol and triglyceride levels were investigated in the brain of rats. Rats were fed with a diet containing 15% of the oils for a period of 8 weeks. The rats were then decapitated, brain samples were removed, homogenized and cholesterol and TG levels were measured. Brain cholesterol and Triglycerides levels of all animals receiving different oils were significantly higher according to the contol except TG level of animals receiving margarine. Brain cholesterol levels of the vegetable oils were statistically higher than those receiving saturated oil. Thus, cholesterol level of the rats fed with olive oil group was significantly higher than that of the other groups but those receiving sunflower oil group and Triglycerides level of the animals receiving olive oil was significantly higher than that of the other groups except animal supplemented with soybean oil. Thus, it is concluded that brain lipid levels of rats are differently effected by various oils and mechanism of which needs to be investigated.

《人间天堂》是美国20世纪著名作家F.S.菲茨杰拉德的成名作。小说生动记录了艾莫里·布莱恩"成长——恋爱——幻灭"的历程,深刻揭示了一战后的美国青年对"美国梦"狂放而不懈的追寻。这种追寻,集中体现在艾莫里对自我的追寻及对爱情的追寻中。年轻的艾莫里曾经不顾一切地想要凭借自己的天赋和智力获得声望和地位,后来才发现他所追求的,甚至包括爱情,都不值得赞美。这一幻灭历程,充分显示了"美国梦"的虚无。菲茨杰拉德在《人间天堂》中展现了一系列对生活和时代的观察,这也逐渐成为他后期的小说中持续的创作主题。     

Implementing the Brian Deer Classification Scheme for Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute

ABSTRACT

The library at Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute has a collection of more than 4,000 books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials focused on the culture, history, and language of the Cree Nation. Both Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Classification use non-Indigenous perspectives that result in unwieldy call numbers for our items, while nevertheless losing the specificity of subjects in our collection. We therefore chose to implement the Brian Deer Classification (BDC) scheme. BDC is a nontraditional system developed specifically for Indigenous libraries in which the collections inform the classification plan. Catalogers with specialized knowledge of the community represented in the collection is essential to success.     

THE REALITY OF A FAKE IMAGE News norms,photojournalistic craft,and Brian Walski's fabricated photograph

A few weeks into the start of the Iraq War in 2003, the front page of the Los Angeles Times featured a large photograph depicting a dramatic scene in which a British soldier motions to Iraqi civilians to stay down while a father carrying a child creeps across the dirt. The image ran in several US newspapers before it was discovered to be a composite of two different images cobbled together by the veteran photographer, Brian Walski, on his laptop in Basra. The Los Angeles Times immediately fired Walski and, along with other journalists, commented publicly on the wrongness of his actions while reasserting the soundness of their reporting. In keeping with paradigm repair, many in the US journalistic community eschewed questions surrounding the complex practices of photojournalism to instead insist on the principle of objectivity as a guiding news norm. This view omits much, including the importance of craft and the role of aesthetic criteria in photojournalism. Especially in war, journalism privileges the dramatic image to communicate conflict. From this perspective the Walski incident raised issues related to the proliferation of digital photography and editing software, the visual representation of war, and the uneasy relationship between images and reality.
