A Comparative Analysis of the Image of the Road in Jack Kerouac's On the Road and Comac McCarthy's The Road

As in many American classics,the road is a central image in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road(1957)and Comac McCarthy’s The Road(2006).This paper intends to carry out a comparative analysis of this image in these two postmodern masterpieces.The paper starts with an investigation of the image in the two works separately and ends with a more comprehensive and comparative study of this topic.

TV,technology, and McCarthyism: crafting the democratic renaissance in an age of fear

One of the most watched political events in the United States at mid‐century, the Army‐McCarthy hearings coincided with the early period of the reception and evaluation of television as a force in society. Although optimistic rhetoric often attends the rise of new technologies, worries and fears about the power of television pervaded coverage of the hearings. The popular press expressed concern that Edward R. Murrow and Joseph McCarthy exercised unrivaled control over television viewers. Murrow and McCarthy became condensation symbols in a new struggle over control of the airwaves, and their highly publicized standoff established discursive rules for thinking about the power of audiences, journalists, and politicians.     

Everyday Expertise,Autism, and “Good” Mothering in the Media Discourse of Jenny McCarthy

We examine Jenny McCarthy's mediated crusade to cure and prevent autism to better understand contemporary discourses about mothering, expertise, and gender. McCarthy distrusts traditional scientific and medical expertise and exalts what have long been seen as feminine modes of knowing such as instinct and experience. Her claims dismiss the medical community as wholly corrupt while reifying women's stereotypical identity as mothers. Furthermore, her campaign demonstrates the ways in which our current ethopolitical culture – which values multiple streams of knowledge and democratizes expertise – intersects with a postfeminist culture to limit women's power and create a culture of anxiety around motherhood.     

Conditions influencing rural and town women's participation in the labor force : Some important considerations

This paper suggests that changes in the basic conditions of subsistence of Bangladeshi families, particularly increasing destitution and landlessness, are prime factors in forcing increasing numbers of rural and urban women into the wage sector of the economy. It has been found that as an initial step towards women's control over their own lives, participation in the labor force may be considered an advance for women in comparison to previous forms of labor. It is suggested, however, that the patterning of wage labor in less developed capitalist countries, to the extent that it follows Western trends, has every possibility of duplicating in Bangladesh the structures of women's exploitation and differential income earning opportunities hindering women's development in other countries, It is also suggested that traditional forms of social control legitimating and governing the subordination of women in Bangladesh are being undermined by worsening socio-economic conditions. It has been found that the traditional system controlling women's subordination, which is known as purdah, may be losing saliency for increasing numbers of rural families. This leads one to conclude that the development and extension of a wage economy brings new forms of social control involving contradictory results, exploitation, and dependence on the one hand, and changing conditions of independence and control on the other.

新中国成立以后不久 ,美国兴起了一股强大的反共反民主浪潮——麦卡锡主义 ,它深刻地影响了美国国会、国务院以及军方在对华政策上的决策 ,从而使美国的对华政策在冷战的大背景下 ,经历了一个从“等待尘埃落定”到采取一条孤立、敌视和遏制新中国的外交路线的转变过程。
