Learners in the trades are faced with learning a large amount of technical vocabulary along with the content of their field, but they do not tend to encounter this language outside their courses of study. This technical vocabulary is a core element in their developing knowledge of their trade and their learner identity. This article focuses first on identifying technical vocabulary in Fabrication using specialised written and spoken corpora, and through extensive checking with experts in the field as well as reference sources. A technical word list of 1079 types was developed, along with a list of common abbreviations and their meanings and a list of proper nouns. The technical word list covers over 30% of the vocabulary in the written Fabrication corpus and just over 9% of the spoken Fabrication corpus. The second part of the article discusses this vocabulary in light of the concept of vocational thresholds and provides suggestions for incorporating the word list into pedagogy, including an apprenticeship approach in which a focus on literacy/literacy acquisition is embedded into content teaching. Suggestions for future research are also included.  相似文献

Interest in the integration of refugees has grown with the increase in numbers of asylum seekers dispersed across the UK. The ability to communicate effectively in English is seen as the key priority in facilitating integration, while a lack of English language is seen as one of the major barriers to refugee employment. Some £267 million was spent on English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes in 2004/05. However, commentators have observed that asylum seekers and refugees continue to struggle to speak English. This paper examines data from interviews with refugees and ESOL tutors, and statutory data recording retention and achievement of asylum seekers and refugees, to explore the extent to which they are achieving in ESOL, and the effectiveness of the existing monitoring system in assessing whether ESOL meets the needs of asylum seekers and refugee learners. It finds that there are major inconsistencies between the retention and success rates observed in the monitoring data and those reported by tutors and refugees. A range of problems are identified that indicate that monitoring is neither robust nor reliable and that refugees and asylum seekers are struggling to learn sufficient English to enable integration.  相似文献

剑桥评价是英国同时也是欧洲最大的教育考试机构,它所推出的ESOL考试项目得到广泛认可。ESOL考试采用AIJTE测试开发流程,根据理论发展和考生需求变化,定期对自己的考试项目进行评估,采用VRIP质量评价体系评估试题的质量,并从考试的各个环节收集证据。本文提出,应当在分析剑桥评价ESOL考试的基础上,立足国内外语考试,将先进的理论引入测试,加强效度证据收集,定期对测试进行评估,并不断开发新的考试项目,以此来完善考试,使其更好地适应发展的需要。  相似文献

Newly arrived from Cuba, Angelica, Dora, Marina, and Damaris attempted to negotiate new surroundings and immigrant identities, building a sense of home for themselves and their families. Data from qualitative interviews, classroom observations, and focus group conversations revealed hopes that by acquiring English language skills, they would improve their quality of life in their new country. Struggles included personal factors situated in their pasts in Cuba and their new surrounds in the Miami Cuban exile enclave, contexts that were further complicated by uncertain expectations of new lives in Miami and the overwhelming task of learning a new language at a local adult education center. The women negotiated pressure from spouses, assisted children in Cuba, pondered uncertainties of crossing cultural and linguistic borders, and anticipated eventual acceptance within the greater English‐speaking society. The women’s individual luchas (struggles) and English language learning efforts were tempered by their dreams for their children and themselves.  相似文献

It is an effective and efficient way that teachers can design their teaching plans or exercises according to situation that individual students are in. Thus, single-case designs will be helpful in this field. A read aloud audio recording was made by a Chinese advanced or at least upper intermediate English learner. Four pronunciation features of this learner were analysed according to Standard British English. The three suprasegmental features influence speaker's intelligibility more than the segmental feature.In English as the second or foreign language classes, more teachers tend to adopt the intelligibility principle in English pronunciation teaching.  相似文献
