新自由主义视域中教育与国家的关系——韦斯特的"国家公共教育神话论"评析

新自由主义是当代西方学者探讨教育与国家关系的重要理论视域与知识资源。英国当代著名新自由主义经济学家埃德温.韦斯特在教育与国家关系研究领域卓有建树。通过对国家保护儿童以及公共教育邻近效应原则的批判,韦斯特致力于揭穿国家公共教育的神话,进而论证国家放任教育的历史合法性和理论合法性,力主消除教育的国家垄断,构建国家教育责任的新模式。韦斯特的国家公共教育神话论具有特定的历史性和境遇性,可以为我国教育理论研究和教育改革实践提供一定的启示和教训。

A Case Study of Edwin Howard Armstrong's Public Relations Campaign for Frequency Modulation

Edwin Howard Armstrong is commonly remembered as the inventor of frequency modulation (FM). There are those, however, who dispute this claim and assert that Armstrong's legacy is a work of fiction rather than history. This study examines the extensive public relations campaign on behalf of both FM and Armstrong from 1940 until after his death. This thesis is a case study of this campaign for the purpose of understanding the narrative presented to the American public.

Eugene Nida was a linguist who developed the dynamic-equivalence translation theory.As a comparative literature and transla tion scholar from a younger generation,Edwin Gentzler examines the main points of Nida’s translation theory from a deconstructionist perspective and challenges Nida’s authority as a pioneer in the fields of translation theory.The paper analyzes Gentzler’s criticism against Nida’s work.     

Review Essay: Assessing Rhetorics of Social Resistance

This essay draws from Edwin Black's Rhetorical Questions to illuminate the role of mutability in rhetoric, consciousness, and social idioms as it is displayed in Haydar ‘Abd al‐Shafi's speech delivered at the Madrid conference on October 31, 1991. Shaft's speech represents a significant mutation in Palestinian discourse. In this speech, the symbolic mold and the hereditarian social idioms that had controlled the Palestinian narrative until the intifada yielded to a mixed idiom that retained the hereditarian values essential for Palestinian identity but opened up space for the convictional values necessary for negotiation and rapprochement with Israel. This essay demonstrates that rhetorical critical theory could benefit from a close reading and application of the themes in Rhetorical Questions.
