Sexual Harassment as [Dys]Functional Process: A Feminist Standpoint Analysis

Researchers have approached the study of sexual harassment as though it were dysfunctional. However, a feminist standpoint theory analysis would suggest that it functions differently for men and women. A study using discussion groups and stimulated recall interviews was conducted in a large health care organization. A thematic analysis revealed a primary theme of sexual harassment as a [dys]functional process. For the male participants, sexual behavior served as a coping mechanism for stress, as a form of therapeutic care, and to create and demonstrate camaraderie. For the women participants, sexual behavior tended to be either nonfunctional or dysfunctional. They did not associate it with stress reduction, therapeutic touch, and viewed group camaraderie as a means of prevention. Implications are discussed.     

The Organizational Tension of Othering

In this paper narratives submitted to this issue are reviewed and critiqued using the feminist lenses of othering and organizational irrationality. Four emergent themes in the narratives are identified and discussed, with the themes and the feminist critique of them used to provide a set of recommendations for developing researcher-IRB working relationships.

从女权主义角度考察新时期中国女作家的创作，最初的创作常常被视为不够格的女性文学。但女性作家在融入整个文坛合奏的过程中，的确还触及到了女性的某些特殊问题。在时代的开放态度与西方女权主义文学理论的触发下，中国当代女性文学获得了前所未有的性别意识。在总体上呈现出从温柔敦厚到乖戾尖新的转变过程中，不同女性作家仍然做出了各自的审美选择。     

The cooking teacher: investigating gender stereotypes in a Korean kindergarten

This article discusses some findings from a small‐scale investigation of children's gendered beliefs and behaviours in a Korean kindergarten which was attempting to challenge gender stereotyping through the anti‐bias intervention of a ‘cooking curriculum’. A sample of 14 children, some with ‘working’ mothers and some with ‘housewife’ mothers, was observed for two months, and informally interviewed on several occasions. The children's mothers were also interviewed. The findings are situated in the context of the changing, but still traditional, culture of Korean society, as well as in the contexts of early childhood education and theories of gender acquisition. They confirm that, although children are highly likely to reproduce the beliefs current in their home environment, they are open to reconstructing these views when actively challenged to consider alternatives, either by the school curriculum or by engaging in debate with a researcher or practitioner. The nature of the ‘alternative’ views available may however be problematic.     

“Writing Will Keep You Free”: Allusions to and Recreations of the Fairy Tale Heroine in <Emphasis Type="Italic">The House on Mango Street</Emphasis>

This article explores how Sandra Cisneros alludes to and recasts popular fairy tales in The House on Mango Street to reveal their troubled legacy in the lives of many women in the novel. Drawing upon Latina feminist theory and Cisneros’s autobiographical writing, this article posits that the main character Esperanza’s alternative “happily ever after” comes through locating the vocation of writing as the fulcrum for self-definition and social change. It is suggested that feminist literary criticism can be enhanced through analysis of heroines from diverse cultural backgrounds and theoretical frameworks attuned to racial and ethnic diversity.

男性语境中的新女性形象——用女性主义叙事学解读《法国中尉的女人》

约翰·福尔斯的杰作《法国中尉的女》以新颖的叙事技巧丰富的叙事层次塑造了一个聪颖、叛逆而叉神秘女性形象莎拉．本文借鉴西方女性主义叙事学对叙事话语和性别身份的研究,从女性主义叙事学的角度重新解读莎拉的形象,分析福尔斯是如何在男性语境中还原一个文化他者的新女性形象,进而思考莎拉这一新女性形象的出现对以男权为主导的社会历史语境产生的影响。     

Redefining Hijab: American Muslim Women's Standpoints on Veiling

Feminist standpoint theory suggests that, although powerful discourses attempt to define women on the “margins” of society, women's cultural positions provide them with heightened understandings of the contradictions between their experiences and the ways the dominant group defines them. Thus, while many Americans believe hijab—also called a “veil” or “headscarf”—functions to oppress women, veiled women probably possess alternative understandings. In this study, 13 veiled American Muslim women share their experiences, and under the lens of standpoint theory, the participants' definition of hijab emerges. Specifically, the women inscribe hijab with meanings shaped by their unique cultural standpoints. Hijab functions to define Muslim identity, perform a behavior check, resist sexual objectification, afford more respect, preserve intimate relationships, and provide freedom.     

女性主义批评课程设置难点及应对策略

目前国内很多高校开设性别研究课程,可见,女性主义批评作为一种理论,在文学研究中的作用举足轻重。但由于从事性别研究的人员专业繁多,使得女性主义批评在理论研究和批评实践的层面,都存在着概念误用的状况,甚至出现概念的含混不清、阐释的简单化和机械化等问题。鉴于此,采取关键词的课程设置方式,恰恰可以避免这个问题,不仅让课程条理清晰,而且学理性强,节约教学资源,彰显文艺理论专业特色。     

勇敢叛逆的海斯特——解析霍桑《红字》中的女性主义意识

美国浪漫主义作家霍桑的代表作《红字》讲叙了女主人公海斯特因所谓的"通奸"罪而遭受屈辱和惩罚的的故事。作者成功塑造了一个敢爱敢当、勇于反抗社会习俗的反叛女性新形象—海斯特。海斯特坚定的反抗意识和叛逆行为贯穿文章的始终,体现了霍桑的女性主义意识。
