White Skin,Black Friend: A Fanonian application to theorize racial fetish in teacher education

In Black Skin, white masks (1967, Grove Press), Franz Fanon uses a psychoanalytic framework to theorize the inferiority-dependency complex of Black men in response to the colonial racism of white men. Applying his framework in reverse, this theoretical article psychoanalyzes the white psyche and emotionality with respect to the racialization process of whites and their racial attachment to Blackness. Positing that such a process is interconnected with narcissism, humanistic emptiness, and psychosis, this article presents how racial attachment becomes racial fetish. Such a fetish reifies whiteness by accumulating fictive kinships with friends of color; hence, the common parlance of ‘But I have a Black friend!’ The article, then, overlays this theoretical interpretation onto the subject of teacher education in the US, specifically urban teacher education programs that are predominantly comprised of white middle-class females who claim a desire to ‘save’ urban students of color. Ending with the dangers and hopes of a more humanistic friendship, this article offers emotional ways one can self-actualize the racialization process.     

Del término descolonización y sus derivas pedagógicas

RESUMEN

En tiempos de globalización neoliberal, de enorme sufrimiento de nuestros pueblos y naturalezas, resulta necesario (re) visitar las ideas de los pensadores anticoloniales y a Frantz Fanon (1925–1961). Sus aportes son una vía crítica para recuperar historias de resistencia al colonialismo, se parte de su producción intelectual para luego observar sus derivas y las marcas que este intelectual dejó en la obra de Paulo Freire. Mi intención es analizar las influencias de Fanon, observar como el martinico es una referencia ineludible en el pensamiento latinoamericano, caribeño y del mundo periférico en general. La crítica política que nos propuso puede sintetizarse en el par descolonización-liberación. En tanto enunciación interpelante permitió analizar en clave de sospecha muchos de nuestros presupuestos teóricos-prácticos de fuerte contenido eurocéntrico que se encuentran presentes en la educación. En la actualidad las discusiones sobre la descolonización han vuelto, están de algún modo a reconfigurando nuestras bibliotecas, a pesar de ser parte de nuestra memoria, y biografías políticas han podido ir más allá ellas. Para responder a los avances y la complejidad de la descolonización-liberación, en tanto núcleo de sentido, es necesario realizar una genealogía del concepto para estudiar como nutre los debates actuales de las teorías sociales críticas y de la pedagogía de la liberación.     

Towards a deconstructed curriculum: Rethinking higher education in the Global North

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to argue for the deconstruction rather than the decolonisation of the neocolonial curriculum. Globalisation facilitates the democratisation of higher education, which is now accessible to more people than ever before, but globalisation also facilitates the expansion of the ideological dominance of the Global North over the Global South by means of the neocolonial curriculum. Contemporary attempts to decolonise Global South curricula are proceeding very slowly. We propose an alternative, the deconstruction of the Global North curriculum, i.e. a radical change to the Global North curriculum that exploits the neoliberal imperative to maximise profit in order to undermine the neocolonial curriculum. We use two case studies – Frantz Fanon and Çi?dem Ka?itçiba?i – to demonstrate how the deconstruction of the Global North curriculum can be achieved, by the prioritisation of theory and practice that are sensitive to context.
