1625年，西班牙耶稣会士拉斯·科尔特斯神父搭乘商船从菲律宾驶往澳门，途经广东省潮州府海岸遇难沉船。拉斯·科尔特斯神父等一些生还者被中国当局做为“海盗”而俘获，广东省的潮州、广州和肇庆府等当局先后审讯了这批人。经过在澳门的耶稣会士们的多方“营救”，他们终于于1626年返回马尼拉。拉斯·科尔特斯神父在他于广东海岸滞留的近一年期间，留下了一部《中国游记》。     

Righting the Commons in Red Rock Canyon

In this essay we examine the coil-bound notebooks kept at the summit of Turtlehead Peak in Red Rock Canyon, a recreational hiking trail on the immediate outskirts of Las Vegas. Of the many different sorts of entries, a “nature-culture binary” is the most dominant and unique pattern to be found in the journals. We argue that this nature-culture binary serves as a piece of rhetorical equipment useful for navigating the daunting ecological complexities of everyday life. Invoking culturally familiar tropes of sublimity-and-banality, hikers renew their civic vows by “righting” themselves through the journals. We thus argue that the notebooks ultimately serve as the locus of a “becoming-common” within discourse. At bottom, the nature-culture binary enables hikers to affirm—and in affirming make available, and in making available make possible—the noblest ideals and loftiest hopes of a shared material existence. We conclude by noting a darker implication of this rhetorical performance, namely that the seeds of a more harmonious ecological future are sown alongside a dangerously innocent self-righteousness.     

Bilingual-bicultural education in Mexico: Recent research

Public bilingual education for non-Spanish-speaking Indian children has been in existence in Mexico for some 33 years, longer than in the United States. Since a review of research on bilingual education in Mexico, published in 1978, both the quantity and quality of the studies has increased notably. Basic studies have prevailed, especially those related to the myriad Indian languages of the country. Action research, incidental to the preparation of curriculum materials, has also been more fruitful than in the past. The few objective evaluations conducted during the period under consideration, all government sponsored, have been notable for the publication of a wide range of results, including those critical of official programs. Equally notable has been the alacrity with which the results have been applied to planning and programs, if not yet at the school house level.     

An overview of pluralistic therapy with application to Hispanics

This paper pinpoints three critical questions in pluralistic counseling: Are the psychological differences between ethnic groups extensive enough to necessitate ethnic-specific therapeutic techniques?; How should we educate and measure effectiveness of pluralistic therapists?; What research is needed to close gaps of our understanding about pluralistic therapy? Study of Hispanic cultures provides many examples of maladjustment syndromes that are culturally-specific. These culturally-specific syndromes of maladjustment among Hispanics are used to illustrate directions for developing ethnic-specific therapeutic modalities. The characteristics of effective pluralistic therapists as delineated in social and psychological literature are summarized, and directions for future research are outlined.
