Utility value is associated with positive learning outcomes in science and is often used to motivate engagement in the sciences, but less is known about what influences its development and maintenance, particularly during the critical middle school years. Using multinomial regression applied to longitudinal data from approximately 2600 middle-school students, we test the relationship of science classroom experiences (affective engagement, behavioral-cognitive engagement, & perceived success) and optional formal and optional informal experiences to changes in science utility value. Furthermore, we address whether the same factors that predict growth in utility value also predict absence of decline. Overall, we find all five factors are associated with changes in utility value, but some have different relationships with growth vs. decline outcomes. These findings provide a more nuanced view of factors associated with utility value towards science (both in and out of the science classroom), as well as practical implications for educational practice.  相似文献

The current study investigated students’ improvement on a writing task following the use of annotated exemplars, teacher comments, and the combination of both approaches. A sample of 94 middle school students (age M = 12.42, SD = 0.96) from a private school in Brazil was randomly assigned to one of three feedback conditions: annotated exemplars, teacher comments, and both annotated exemplars and teacher comments. Participants were asked to write an essay and then revise it by using teacher comments or annotated exemplars (or both). Results showed improvements in students’ writing from first to second draft, but no statistically significant differences among the groups were found. Further, girls scored higher than boys in both the first and final drafts irrespective of the feedback condition. These results show the promise of annotated exemplars in facilitating students’ improvement on a writing task through effective self-feedback generation while significantly reducing teachers’ time investment.  相似文献

利用综合的研究方法对株洲市城区中学生参与体育活动的态度、动机等现状进行了调查与分析。结果表明:中学生对体育活动的态度是比较积极的,具有较强的体育运动倾向,男生对体育活动的态度明显好于女生;在参与体育活动的频度与意识上男生明显高于女生。中学生对参与体育活动的兴趣比较高,对现有的运动项目(如篮球,排球,足球,长跑,羽毛球,舞蹈,乒乓球,体操,武术等)的兴趣比较集中,并且女生兴趣的稳定性要高于男生;保持身体健康和增强体质仍是中学生参与体育活动最主要的目的。  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine middle school students’ attitudes toward physical education using an attitude instrument grounded in attitude theory. In addition, this investigation also sought to ascertain if gender and grade level influence student attitudes toward the subject matter. Participants for this study were 995 students from grades 6 to 8. A previously validated attitude instrument based on a two-component view of attitude with scores that showed evidence of reliability and validity was used. Overall all students had moderately positive attitudes toward physical education. There was, however, a decline in attitude scores as students progressed in grade level.
