Merchant of Mercy, Merchant of Death: How Values Advocacy Messages Influence Jury Deliberations

This exploratory study addresses the ability of values advocacy messages to influence target publics' behavior beyond consumer purchase decisions. In doing so, it fills a gap in the research by extending our understanding of the persuasive premises of values advocacy messages beyond rhetorical (de)construction; consumer behavior; and the establishment of typologies, definitions, and methods of inquiry. Using focus group methodology, target audience members (n=37) of a contemporary values advocacy campaign reflect upon the messages presented in the context of jury deliberations. The findings show that focus group participants would likely reduce punitive damage judgments if exposed to values advocacy messages. The social and cultural implications exposed by participants' comments reflect ongoing concern among critical scholars about the ability of corporations to manipulate public behavior and indicate the ethical conundrum between corporate and community speech.

菲利普·罗斯的《普通人》彰显出强烈的死亡意识。小说刻画了主人公在面临死亡时焦虑、恐惧的心态,也叙述了主人公力图超越死亡的心路历程,这一切都体现了罗斯在哲学意义上的"先行到死"的观点。这种观点与德国哲学家海德格尔对死亡的看法是相通的。"先行到死"观源自于罗斯自身的犹太性,其最终意旨是"超越死亡"。     

美国作家罗斯《人性的污点》“身份情节”评析

菲利普·罗斯是美国著名犹太小说作家,《人性的污点》是其美国三部曲的最后一部。罗斯在这部小说中遵循并超越了他称之为"身份情节"的体裁。这部小说通过各种方式将种族身份解释为种类、符号或生物学特征,最终揭示了主人公科尔曼种族身份的最具有决定性作用的特征就是他的隐秘性。对于罗斯来说,秘密不仅是身份的来源,也是欲望和叙述的驱动力。《人性的污点》不仅仅通过种族身份的掩藏与揭露探究了种族问题,也揭示了人性的很多污点,譬如婚外恋、乱伦等。但小说所有的辅助线索都是为了服务、突出种族问题这个大前提,背景的叙述也是为了给科尔曼和弗妮娅的恋情铺平道路。     

The importance of ethnicity in ethnic studies programs

A study was undertaken to determine the importance of ethnicity in an ethnic studies program. Three different dimensions were examined (1) the importance of the ethnicity of the teacher in the opinions of administrators and students; (2) ethnic differences among students in attitudes and expectations regarding such a program; (3) the relationship between the structure or content of the ethnic studies program and the long-range ethnic goals of society. Results of a nationwide sample of academic deans and a sample of students from two colleges in San Antonio, Texas, indicate that the ethnicity of teachers is an important concern for both administrators and students. It was also found that attitudes and expectations, as well as what the primary function of the program and the long-range ethnic goals should be, differed with the ethnicity of students.     

E-democracy,E-Contestation and the Monitorial Citizen*

It is argued that Pettit’s conception of “contestatory democracy” is superior to deliberative, direct and epistemic democracy. The strong and weak points of these conceptions are discussed drawing upon the work of a.o Bruce Bimber. It is further argued that ‘contestation’ and ‘information’ are highly relevant notions in thinking about, just, viable and sustainable design for E-democracy. *A version of this paper was presented at Ethicomp 2002, Lisbon.
