The Meaning of Urban Violence in Africa: Bulawayo,Southern Rhodesia, 1890–1960

Until recently the abundant literature on South African urban history has seen violence in towns and cities in terms either of anti-colonial protest or of labour consciousness. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission defined the urban violence with which it was concerned as exclusively political. More recently, however, questions of spatiality, township culture, generation, and gender have offered alternative or supplementary explanations.

This article moves from the South African historiography to the less well known history of Southern Rhodesian towns and townships. In particular it focuses on Rhodesia's main industrial centre, Bulawayo. Between 1929 and 1960 there were four dramatic events in Bulawayo which involved varying degrees of violence. These were the ‘faction fights' of December 1929; the railway strike of 1946; the general strike of April 1948; and the so-called zhii riots of 1960. There have recently been authoritative analyses of the 1946 and 1948 strikes. This article therefore concentrates on the events of 1929 and 1960.

The 1929 ‘faction fights' have been claimed for political economy by a classic article which sees them essentially as a response to changing patterns of colonial labour exploitation; the 1960 riots have been claimed as the first achievement of confrontational African nationalism in Southern Rhodesia. This article argues that an alternative explanation can be found in internal African struggles for dominance of an emerging black urban culture. It analyses the 1929 violence as a struggle between ‘stylish’ young labour migrants and a longer established township elite. It analyses the 1960 riots as a ‘war’ between the township poor and the newly prosperous traders and rentiers. Both episodes greatly complicated the prospects for a unitary urban nationalism or for effective and combined labour action.

历时文本中宗教词汇翻译比较——以《汤姆叔叔的小屋》三个汉译本为例

《汤姆叔叔的小屋》中的宗教情结是小说的显著特征。以小说不同时期的三个汉译本为例,采用描述性与解释性相结合的方法,对比分析小说中宗教词汇的翻译。结果表明:宗教词汇的理解与解释深受译者特定的历史阶段和自我视域的影响,是译者发挥主观能动性从而和原作者以原作为中心的动态阐释过程。     

小说《弃儿汤姆·琼斯史》人物塑造中对照手法的使用

小说《弃儿汤姆·琼斯史》历来被认为是亨利·菲尔丁最著名的小说,也被列入世界文学经典之列。笔者尝试运用对照手法对两组人物进行分析：汤姆和比菲尔＼汤姆和奥维资。值得注意的是,小说中对照手法采用了两种形式,一种对照是两种截然不同性格的人物之间的对比,另外一种对照是同一个人物其自身不同方面的对比。这两种形式的对照为小说栩栩如生的人物塑造起到了重要作用。     

上市公司基于配股目的盈余管理行为实证分析

通过运用P-P概率图对2001-2004年所有上市公司净资产收益率的分布进行正态检验,验证上市公司总体上存在操纵净资产收益率的倾向;以2004年配股的16家上市公司为样本,运用修正的Jones模型计算出代表盈余管理程度的操纵性应计利润,结果显示这16家上市公司为申请配股均进行了盈余管理。这一分析为2004年配股上市公司的赢余管理程度提供经验的证据。     

An immunological based study of monoclonal gammopathies among suspected individuals in Kashmir region

Serum and urine samples from 513 patients clinically suspected of monoclonal gammopathies over a period of five years (1992–97) were subjected to various immunological procedures viz, electrophoresis, immunoelectrophoresis and immunoglobulin estimations. Laboratory investigations confirmed gammopathies in 10.33%. It was observed that overall age of incidence for monoclonal gammopathies in both sexes was between 42–72 years with a male to female ratio of 1.4∶1. Predominant paraprotein detected was IgG type (75.47%) followed by IgA (16.98%) and Bence Jones proteins (7.55%). Amongst positive patients, 64.16% were having kappa (k) type light chains and 35.84% lambda (δ) type light chains. 69.39% patients with serum M component (IgG and IgA) had Bence Jones proteinuria. Densitometric scanning revealed that majority of IgG type paraprotein was found in the slow gamma globulin region and majority of IgA type paraprotein was found equally distributed between beta and fast gamma globulin regions. Both types had decreased albumin and alpha-2-globulin concentrations as compared to normal controls. Immunoglobulin levels in patients with paraprotein had very high levels of serum IgG (6467.0 mg%) and IgA (2714.0 mg%) in respective types of monoclonal gammopathies; the rest of immunoglobulin classes were either at normal or decreased levels.     

Determination of thigh volume in youth with anthropometry and DXA: Agreement between estimates

Abstract

This study examined the agreement between estimates of thigh volume (TV) with anthropometry and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in healthy school children. Participants (n=168, 83 boys and 85 girls) were school children 10.0–13.9 years of age. In addition to body mass, height and sitting height, anthropometric dimensions included those needed to estimate TV using the equation of Jones & Pearson. Total TV was also estimated with DXA. Agreement between protocols was examined using linear least products regression (Deming regressions). Stepwise regression of log-transformed variables identified variables that best predicted TV estimated by DXA. The regression models were then internally validated using the predicted residual sum of squares method. Correlation between estimates of TV was 0.846 (95%CI: 0.796–0.884, S_y·x=0.152L). It was possible to obtain an anthropometry-based model to improve the prediction of TVs in youth. The total volume by DXA was best predicted by adding body mass and sum of skinfolds to volume estimated with the equation of Jones & Pearson (R=0.972; 95%CI: 0.962–0.979; R ²=0.945).
