Connecting Forensics and Assessment in the Twenty-First Century

A major feature of education in the twenty-first century is assessment. Forensic educators should heighten the importance of learning outcomes and utilize assessment efforts to directly measure how forensic programs develop educational foundations for students. This article focuses on the use of tournaments and noncompetitive educational outcomes, such as engagement within academic communities, service-learning, and the promotion of the value of forensics, to connect the educational benefits of the activity to help define the mission of forensics in the twenty-first century.     

奥林匹克标志知识产权保护--基于国际法与比较法视角的研究

本文采取国际法与比较法的研究方法,对奥林匹克标志知识产权保护进行了调查研究。国外关于奥林匹克标志的法律保护已经积累了一些经验。本文先后分析了澳大利亚、新西兰、加拿大、美国、英国、法国等国家关于奥林匹克知识产权保护的主要法律和典型案例,得出结论绝大多数主办过奥运会的国家都有加强奥林匹克知识产权保护的措施,这些措施主要有:以单行立法加强保护;以特殊的知识产权类型加强保护;在司法实践中加强对奥林匹克知识产权的保护。我国可以借鉴上述经验,这必将有利于我国奥运会的成功和奥运经济的繁荣。     

后西方社会学与当代中国社会学

中国近40年改革开放的伟大实践,在很多方面超越了西方传统理论。"后西方社会学"是指在全球化背景下根据各国不同的新发展经验对当代社会学的重塑。"后"不是摈弃、颠覆、反抗和解构,而是创新、发展、重构甚至超越,是试图共同建构一种超越西方和非西方二元对立的社会学知识体系。"问题导向"的当代中国社会学,将社会学研究和解决经济社会发展中的现实问题密切联系起来,为"中国经验"的积累提供了有力的知识支持,是"后西方社会学"的重要组成部分。中国社会结构转型研究超越了西方"传统"和"现代"的分野,揭示了社会转型动态和连续谱式的复杂进程;产权研究摒弃西方中心主义的理念,提出了关系产权、混合产权和集体产权等概念,深入揭示产权的实际运作逻辑;"单位制"和"人力资本失灵"的研究,拓展了西方的社会成本理论,挑战了人力资本理论,丰富了转型时期的组织研究;"中等收入群体"的概念和农民工积极社会态度的发现,对于加深西方中产阶级的研究,促进国际移民的社会融合都具有重要启示;"关系"已经进入西方学术话语体系,中国关系社会学的理论体系应最大限度地容纳、修订、改造,使其成为世界的关系社会学的蓝本。     

eSports – Competitive sports or recreational activity?

eSports is growing around the globe, with more and more individuals are engaged as players or spectators. In this paper, the authors reflect on whether eSports can be considered as sport based on evaluating five characteristics of sport and assessing them for eSports. Currently, eSports are not a sport but there is the potential that eSports will become a sport. Different opportunities how marketers and managers can attend to eSports are outlined.     

Mythmaking in Alien Abduction Narratives

Examination of alien abduction discourse has the potential to inform our understanding of symbolic practices. This essay uses 130 narratives of individuals who claim to have had contact with extraterrestrial beings to argue that alien abduction discourse is a living myth. This myth—the Myth of Communion—is rhetorically significant because it illustrates the formative power of narrative while also revealing certain characteristics about our cultural condition.     

Concern or comfort with social comparisons matter in undergraduate physics courses: Joint consideration of situated expectancy-value theory,mindsets, and gender

Guided by situated expectancy-value and mindset theories, we investigated the mediating roles of students’ experiences of social comparisons (social comparison concern, comfort being oneself) in relations between mindsets, motivation (self-efficacy, task values, and cost), and achievement in undergraduate physics. Gender differences in these mediational pathways were examined. We recruited a large sample (N = 1,218) of students in undergraduate physics courses, administered surveys twice during a semester, and obtained final course grades from university records. Multiple-group structural equation modeling revealed (1) protective roles of a growth mindset in motivation and performance via comfort being oneself, (2) detrimental roles of a fixed mindset in the same outcomes via social comparison concern, and (3) significant gender differences in these relations, such that a growth mindset is less beneficial, while a fixed mindset is more harmful for women (vs. men). Results suggest that social comparison concern acts as a mechanism of a fixed mindset for undermining women’s motivation and performance in physics to a greater extent than men. Scholarly contributions and implications are discussed.     

#NotOkay: Stories of sexual assault in the midst of the 2016 U.S. presidential election

Sexual assault affects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. Social media platforms such as Twitter allow users to anonymously share 140-character messages that serve to convey information and foster a supportive community. Following the release of a 2005 video that captured then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump bragging in vulgar terms about kissing, groping, and trying to have sex with women, women took to Twitter to share their personal stories of sexual assault using the hashtag #NotOkay. The present study examines 1,091 tweets from women who shared their lived experiences with sexual assault. Findings revealed four themes: characteristics of sexual assault, relationship to perpetrator, public vs. private locations, and action and consequence. The results highlight Twitter as a venue for women to share their lived experiences with sexual assault.     

Assessing adverse experiences from infancy through early childhood in home visiting programs

The general aim of early intervention and home visiting programs is to support families to minimize Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). However, assessing children's exposure to these risks is complicated because parents serve as the conduit for both measurement and intervention. The primary aims of the study were to develop an assessment of children's exposure to ACEs and to examine concurrently measured parental child abuse and neglect potential and child social–emotional functioning. Home visiting programs in a southern state implemented the Family Map Inventories (FMI) as comprehensive family assessment and child screenings (N = 1,282) within one month of enrollment. Children (M = 33 months of age, SD = 20) were exposed at rates of 27% to one, 18% to two, 11% to three, and 12% to four or more FMI-ACEs. FMI-ACEs were associated with increased parental beliefs and behaviors associated with child abuse and neglect. FMI-ACEs also significantly predicted the likelihood of the child having at-risk social–emotional development; children with 4 or more FMI-ACEs were over 6 times more likely than those with none to have at-risk scores. The findings add to our understanding of the negative impact of trauma on children and families. Assessing these risks as they occur in a family-friendly manner provides a platform for early intervention programs to work with families to increase family strengths and reduce the impacts of adverse experiences for their children.     

在西方资源与本土经验之间--论诗人王家新的近期创作

王家新是朦胧诗后期和新生代的重要诗人。1999年以来,王家新备受一些年轻的诗人批评,其主要原因在于他的诗歌中有大量的“西方资源”,缺乏“本土经验”。事实上,这种观点值得审慎辨析。诗歌中的“知识”和“生活”的关系非常复杂。本文以王家新近期诗作为例,阐述了自己的看法。

学科队伍建设与大学的发展密切相关,以中美比较的视角,从学科带头人的遴选、产生方式及学科梯队建设等几方面进行比较与分析,借鉴其成功经验并找出差距,进而提高我国学科队伍的建设水平。
