In this paper, we investigate the effects of a community- and school-based service learning experience (SLE) on pre-service physical education teachers’ Indigenous knowledge, cultural competency and pedagogy. Informed by the theoretical tenets of Indigenous research methodologies, experiential learning and critical reflection, we examine 55 final-year pre-service physical education teachers’ (age: 21.9 [8.3]; 10.7% low SES; 68% females) cultural learning and competency in a core unit of study with a six-week SLE. Measures of their experiences included reflective journals, multicultural teaching competency scales and focus group interviews. Findings support the design of the SLE, with statistically significant changes in pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their cultural competency (p < 0.001). Pre-service teachers were able to challenge their assumptions about Indigenous students, plan and implement student-centred and culturally relevant pedagogies. Attention is drawn to the design of this SLE and demonstrates the importance of using Indigenous community members and teachers as mentors, which has not been explored in previous SLE studies. 相似文献

AbstractThis article develops a conceptual model of users’ and designers’ knowledge roles in the information and communication technology design process. The “ideal” center at the intersection of the axes for division of knowledge work and privileging of knowledges represents a balanced distribution of knowledge work between users and designers and an avoidance of privileging either group over the other. The article then applies this model to analyses of the design process for six video games wherein the knowledges of Indigenous peoples in North America were mobilized. It concludes by discussing implications for research and design practice, particularly for broadening the participation and self-articulation of marginalized groups. 相似文献

在多种因素的作用下,加拿大原住民人口的城市迁移趋势越来越明显,不仅为原住民人口的城市迁移提出了新课题,也给城市原住民社区的服务及管理带来了挑战。在对现阶段加拿大原住民人口城市迁移主要原因的分析基础上,对作为公共空间的加拿大城市原住民中心的服务对象及其服务功能展开了研究,并对新形势下如何帮助城市原住民人口适应新环境并尽快融入到城市社区生活等一系列问题进行了重点探讨。最后指出加拿大城市原住民中心可为我国少数民族城市流动人口公共空间构建及其社会管理工作创新提供重要的经验借鉴作用。 相似文献

Bringing a greater number of students into science is one of, if not the most fundamental goals of science education for all, especially for heretofore-neglected groups of society such as women and Aboriginal students. Providing students with opportunities
to experience how science really is enacted—i.e., authentic science—has been advocated as an important means to allow students to know and learn about science. The purpose of this paper is
to problematize how “authentic” science experiences may mediate students’ orientations towards science and scientific career
choices. Based on a larger ethnographic study, we present the case of an Aboriginal student who engaged in a scientific internship
program. We draw on cultural–historical activity theory to understand the intersection between science as practice and the
mundane practices in which students participate as part of their daily lives. Following Brad, we articulate our understanding
of the ways in which he hybridized the various mundane and scientific practices that intersected in and through his participation
and by which he realized his cultural identity as an Aboriginal. Mediated by this hybridization, we observe changes in his
orientation towards science and his career choices. We use this case study to revisit methodological implications for understanding
the role of “authentic science experiences” in science education.
