'She just got me’: supporting care experienced young people negotiating relationships and identities at school

In this article we examine the complex relationship between care experience, mental health and exclusion from school and how young people (YP) negotiate these different experiences and identities. The study is a secondary analysis, informed by symbolic interactionist theory, of interviews conducted with 19 care experienced YP in Scotland. Not all of the YP were excluded and not all had a formal mental health diagnosis, as such our study design allows interrogation of the contexts and relationships which not only facilitate but also disrupt pathways to exclusion. It also allows reconsideration of assumptions of vulnerability which are often applied to care experienced YP. Our findings suggest that these YP are moving beyond ‘role playing’ the identities ascribed to them and actively seek out relationships which enable them to construct alternative identities.     

The RIX Wiki: the use of multimedia advocacy to support person-centred planning in a special needs secondary school – implications for current policy and practice

The article documents findings from a pilot study undertaken in 2012–2013 in a special needs secondary school in the England, that trialled the use of a multimedia advocacy tool, “The RIX Wiki”. The trial was part of the pathfinder programme, which aimed to reform existing Special Education Needs provision, from the system of statementing to one of developing education health care plans. The reforms became enshrined in the Children and Families Act (2014). The findings were overall positive and helped with person-centred planning processes. The discussion is framed within current and future policy directives. We argue that multimedia advocacy approaches and software tools, like the “RIX Wiki” will have a continued role to play in ensuring the needs, aspirations and choices of children and young people with learning disabilities remain central.     

Meeting Information Needs through Global Partnerships: A Roadmap to Becoming a Global Health Sciences Library

Abstract

Supporting global health priorities through the development of robust health science librarianship partnerships is of significant importance. Increased demand for synthesizing evidence-based information, collating quality resources, and increasing research productivity to improve human health requires integration of library and information science skills and expertise. The Health Sciences Library (HSL) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), exists to be an indispensable partner in health information and knowledge, teaching and learning, and research. As global efforts at UNC expanded, the HSL sought to ensure that our global engagement strategy and integration were aligned with campus priorities and partner needs. The HSL created a global research partnership plan: identify resources that improve efficiency, increase access to information, build in-country capacity and expertise—all while strengthening collaborations across multiple countries. Creating a meaningful and sustainable engagement strategy was central to envisioning our path forward and can be used as a framework for consideration by librarians in similar settings.     

中外情报学论文创新性特征研究

[目的/意义] 综合运用定性与定量相结合的方法对近年中外情报学论文的创新性进行分析和对比，揭示情报学领域研究的创新性特征，发现领域学术论文中创新句内部的知识关系，进行更细粒度的论文创新性分析，为研究领域创新点深层次利用提供条件，同时丰富科技论文创新性监测的途径，促进科学研究创新。[方法/过程] 从句子级创新性识别出发，选取中英文各两种情报学期刊作为样本，采用信息抽取和机器学习的方法，将创新句的抽取从现有的摘要扩展到全文，充分利用句子结构和句法特征识别领域创新内容，探讨近年中外情报学论文在创新对象、主题、类别等方面的特征，并做对比分析，最后通过对自动分类的论文集合进行定性的内容分析，总结归纳出中外情报学论文创新的表达范式。[结果/结论] 从创新的表达来看，中外情报学论文创新句的分布情况基本一致，英文期刊论文创新的表达更丰富。从创新性特征来看，英文情报学期刊论文创新主题较集中，而中文主题多样和分散；具体方法的创新是近年情报学领域的创新热点，而在研究方法上创新不足；中英文情报学期刊论文的创新性特点都反映了应用研究、实证研究的成果较多，而理论创新推动缓慢的趋势。     

基于专利引用跨越度计量的两国间间接创新合作机会发现

[目的/意义] 两个国家间的创新合作机会有些是显性直接的，有些是潜在间接的。在此试图构建一种计量和分析专利引用关系的方法，用于发现两国间潜在的间接创新合作机会。[方法/过程] 全球价值链上不同环节专利之间的引用关系中，蕴含着相互衔接、配套的间接合作关系，而不同环节的专利通常具有不同的功能，即IPC存在一定跨越度。因此，设计"专利引用跨越度"指标及算法，用于计量和筛选专利引用网络中"引用跨越度"达到预设阈值的专利引用关系，作为发现间接创新合作机会的基础数据。以新加坡在中国获得授权的发明专利为样本，基于专利引用跨越度计量并配合人工解读和识别，发现中新两国间一系列的间接创新合作机会。[结果/结论] 基于专利引用跨越度计量的两国间间接创新合作机会发现的方法，被实验检验为有效。     

The Mystery Room: discovering the flexibility of an information literacy-based educational escape room

Abstract

The Mystery Room is an educational escape room based on information literacy and applied to multiple audiences, including first-year students and library student employees. In this article, we explain how we developed the game, its theoretical underpinnings, and why it’s a flexible workshop for a variety of audiences.     

The Influence of Hygroscopic Materials on the Fluctuation of Relative Humidity in Museums Located in Historical Buildings

ABSTRACT

The preservation of artefacts in museum collections is profoundly affected by fluctuations in temperature and, especially, relative humidity (RH). Since the late nineteenth century, many studies have been carried out on the best way to control hygrothermal conditions. In old buildings located in maritime temperate climate zones (such as Portugal) with strong thermal inertia, and which have low ventilation rate (relative to the volume and number of visitors), daily and seasonal hygroscopic inertia may help to assure the maintenance of RH stabilization conditions. The use of expensive active systems may be minimized through the passive behaviour of internal finishing building materials. This work presents the results of an experimental laboratory study conducted in a flow chamber to demonstrate the enormous potential of hygroscopic materials in stabilizing interior relative humidity. Based in these results and in-situ monitoring in a museum housed in a building, located in Porto, with a typical construction of the 1950s (granite masonry and reinforced concrete slabs), a numerical analysis was done to quantify the influence of hygroscopic materials in stabilizing the interior relative humidity.     

The effect of number of siblings and birth order on educational attainment: Empirical Evidence from Chinese General Social Survey

Data from China demonstrate that the effect of the number of siblings on education is restricted by many factors, such as children’s gender, urban or rural household registration, whether there is only one child, the birth order of children within the family, and parents’ status. Chinese families have significant preferences for the eldest son and the youngest son. Moreover, research based on the natural experiment and instrumental variable approach suggests that market-oriented reform of education has increased the cost of family education expenditures since China’s reform and opening up, which further aggravates the negative impact on education of having many siblings in an urban setting.
