Hybrid Journals: Ensuring Systematic and Standard Discoverability of the Latest Open Access Articles

An important current challenge for research information providers is ensuring the automated discovery of Open Access (OA) content in hybrid journals. We found no evidence of discovery services that are able to systematically identify the crucially important free full-text availability of OA articles regardless of where and how such articles have been published (i.e., in fully OA journals or in hybrid journals). A solution is important because hybrid journals are proliferating and consequently the chances of missing OA articles is real and is happening. Nearly all of the major publishers now provide such journals in order to take advantage of recent changes in research funder requirements, and to be competitive in the new OA business model. By working with a group of scholarly publisher partners and by using standard metadata elements that publishers are already familiar with, we show a systematic and standardized manner to identify OA at the article level. Our proposal is to embed OA-related elements in the metadata freely exposed by publishers for aggregators and discovery services. For example, in the Table of Content (TOC) Really Simple Syndication feeds the publishers use to announce new journal issues and content. Based on the initial results obtained, we discuss the capabilities of our solution, and evaluate the impact produced by our application in the systematic discoverability of OA content from the participating hybrid journals, using an implementation done with the freely available journal current awareness service—JournalTOCs.     

RSS Feeds for Eastern Europe

ABSTRACT

This piece is a continuation of a previous article about Russian RSS feeds, but with a new focus on feeds originating from or about other Eastern European countries. It also includes a brief discussion of the features of web-based readers and using the Firefox browser to locate feeds. It is intended for a non-technical audience.     

Action Research: Methods That Make Sense

Abstract

This article outlines five Web 2.0 resources and looks at the use of these tools among medical and nursing professionals and students at the Hospital, Medical School, and Nursing School of the University of Pennsylvania. Questionnaires showed that a majority of the individuals surveyed were unfamiliar with Web 2.0 resources. Additional respondents recognized the tools but did not use them in a medical or nursing context, with a minimal number using any tools to expand their medical or nursing knowledge. A lack of time to set up and use the resources, difficulty of set-up and use, skepticism about the quality of user-generated medical content, and a lack of perceived need for Web 2.0 resources contributed substantially to non-use. The University of Pennsylvania Biomedical Library is responding by increasing the availability of basic, quick, and easy-to-use instructional materials for selected Web 2.0 resources.     

News Diversity and Minority Audiences

The rapid growth of Hispanics in the United States, the parallel growth of Spanish-language media, and the difficulties that this population continues to experience in terms of important socio-demographic indicators such as education, immigration, healthcare, and criminal justice, requires research that investigates the ways in which Spanish-language news outlets are delivering the information needed by this group in terms of providing a public service and contributing to democratic notions of the press. Democratic theories of the press posit that in order for a democracy to function properly, all groups should be provided with news coverage that reflects the voices, concerns, and interests of their communities. However, it has often proved difficult for news industries undergoing rapid growth and increasing corporate concentration to serve audiences with diverse news and information needs. In order to examine the extent to which Spanish-language news outlets are providing a diverse range of news and topics relevant to their audiences, researchers used software that gathers Real Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds to archive, organize, and analyze over 10,000 news stories posted to 28 Spanish-language news websites during October 2012. The results show some diversity in the range of topics covered, but the widespread duplication of content across platforms owned by a small handful of media conglomerates found in the results raises important questions about the impact of increasing news homogenization in the digital age and the potential implications for minority audiences.

ticTOCs: A New Service for “Keeping Current”

ticTOCs, a new journal table of contents service, provides users a free resource for managing RSS feeds for new content from selected journals. This service could be used as a complement and in some cases as an alternative to other table of contents providers. Using RSS feeds provided by publishers, ticTOCs provides an easy-to-use interface for finding, viewing, and saving current tables of contents. The service also provides OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) file exports so that users can incorporate the feeds they find in ticTOCs into a feed reader of their choice.     

Free-range RSS Feeds and Farm-raised Journals: What to Expect When Using RSS as a TOC Service

Anyone who has tried to set up RSS feeds with or for a patron knows that the RSS feeds for e-journals can behave wildly, like free-range cattle, while the e-journals that libraries subscribe to tend to be more like farm-raised cattle, because they are packaged for institutions rather than individuals. Because of this disconnect, the experience of teaching RSS feeds to one's patrons can be fraught with “oops” moments. Knowing what to expect can help librarians prepare to teach patrons to use RSS feeds without scaring them away from a powerful tool. This article will discuss some problems to expect and ways to work around them.

气相色谱-质谱法测定饲料中莱克多巴胺

建立了简单、可靠的气相色谱-质谱联用测定饲料中莱克多巴胺的分析方法。试样用0.1mol／L高氯酸溶液提取,离心,中和,经乙酸乙酯-异丙醇萃取,浓缩后,用SCX固相小柱净化,4％浓氨水甲醇溶液洗脱、浓缩干,经N,O-双三甲基硅基三氟乙酰胺衍生,采用选择监测离子（m／z179、250、267、502）模式进行检测。实验结果表明,莱克多巴胺衍生物的峰面积与其浓度在20．0～1000μg／L范围内呈较好的线性关系,相关系数大于0．997;饲料试样在20．0、100和5000μg／kg三水平加标平均回收率在67．5％～92．3％,变异系数在3．0％～12％;方法检出限达5μg／kg。
