Putting the “I” back in team

In the summer of 2013, staff in the Access Services unit of an academic library began a cross-training and collaboration project in an effort to provide continued library service to the campus community. The cross-training was established in an attempt to address a shortage of staff as a result of budget cuts. The cross-training resulted in the transitioning of the Access Services units and the creation of a collaborative team. The development of cross-training and its benefits are addressed in addition to lessons learned.     

Catalogers Unite! Creating Documentation through Collaboration

Recent changes have forced Bowling Green State University (BGSU) to reevaluate our documentation, workflows, and communication. There have been staff retirements, changes in staff responsibilities, and a new faculty cataloger. Additionally, BGSU is implementing a discovery layer, purchasing shelf-ready books, and adding more electronic resources. It has become apparent that documentation needs to be updated and, in many cases, created from scratch. Collaboration is critical as catalogers are currently few in number and are seeing the need to work with other departments in ways unheard of previously. The creation of a new cataloging manual is vital to the success of cataloging at BGSU.     

Literacy in a business context: literacy practices of some Bristol merchants in the sixteenth century

This article considers the education and literacy practices of Bristol merchants involved in overseas trade in the sixteenth century by focusing on their business concerns. It argues that these demanded complex literacy skills and the discussion explores why writing was so central to their work. The merchants required specific training in order to produce and handle documents relating to their mercantile activities. As well as receiving practical training under apprenticeship with a master, merchants’ manuals were available for further guidance. A manual produced by John Browne, a Bristol merchant, is examined to highlight the principles that guided merchants’ literacy practices. Business writings by other Bristol merchants are also discussed to reveal the values that governed their practices. The discussion aims to illustrate how their literacy practices were situated in the context of early modern trade.

本文根据使用说明书的目的和政府相关规定,通过对50篇各种类型的消费品使用说明书进行统计分析,以功能语言学的语域概念为理论基础,分别从词汇学、句法学、篇章学的角度分析了中英文消费品使用说明书的文体特点。最后提出了在消费品使用说明书写作和翻译应遵循的总体原则。     

‘Science’, ‘Wind’ and ‘Bottom’: Eighteenth-Century Boxing Manuals

The eighteenth century witnessed the emergence of a plethora of sporting professionals, many of whom were involved in developing training and coaching practices. Teaching the skills, the ‘science’, of boxing became an important source of income for professional fighters while some practitioners also developed careers as trainers, normally operating on behalf of the wealthy ‘amateurs’ who retained professionals in order to make profitable wagers. These practices were described in some of the early instructional manuals of the period, notably a detailed analysis of wrestling by Parkyns in 1713, who considered technique, fitness, and diet, and by Godfrey in 1747 who included a seminal section on boxing in his A Treatise upon the Useful Science of Defence. The proliferation of boxing manuals in the last quarter of the century reflected both a revival of interest in the sport and a desire to record the essential elements of this martial ‘science’ since it was only now that contemporaries believed a full understanding had been achieved of the importance of ‘wind’ (endurance), ‘bottom’ (courage), and ‘science’ (technique). This paper explores a number of texts where authors discussed these essential components of boxing performance and highlights the longevity of their methods of athletic preparation.

CONSER: The Very Model of a Modern Cooperative Program

Abstract

The CONSER Program is the oldest component of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and many elements that made CONSER a success were adopted by the PCC over the past twenty-five years. This article describes how CONSER’s evolution over the years in the areas of membership, leadership, standards, training and documentation influenced the development of the PCC.     

The Coffee Planter of Saint Domingo: A Technical Manual for the Caribbean Slave Owner

In 1798, Laborie published a manual with detailed instructions for building a coffee plantation, for example, how to purchase and care for slaves, design plantation buildings, and maintain authority. Laborie's language is that behind the institution of slavery: Slaves are property and thus relate to economic success. Through this review, we investigate historical technical documents to see how our past informs our present and how our attention to technical communication today can inform the future.
