Handling math expressions in economics: recoding spreadsheet teaching tool of growth models

In the present paper, we develop a teaching methodology for economic theory. The main contribution of this paper relies on combining the interactive characteristics of spreadsheet programs such as Excel and Unicode plain-text linear format for mathematical expressions. The advantage of Unicode standard rests on its ease for writing and reading mathematical expressions. In this sense, our proposal allows incorporating an easily readable and writable methodology to cope with math expressions when interactive spreadsheets are used and designed in Economics teaching. The resulting nearly plain text can be used with few or no modifications in other numerical computing programs.     

Computer modelling and the curriculum -- integrated or loosely attached?

This paper examines from a number of perspectives a small research project that involved the development and evaluation of a crosscurricular course in computer modelling. It sets out briefly the context, design and results of the project in order both to explain the potential of computer modelling activities in learning to represent quantitative variation, and also to highlight the need to develop teachers' pedagogical practices. The role of information technology (IT) in providing support for generic modelling skills is discussed, and theories of teachers' knowledge growth are used to analyse the challenges for professional development in IT, particularly concerning matters that are relevant to more than one discipline. Conclusions are drawn concerning the need to integrate curriculum development, professional development and different areas of expertise in educational computing research if teachers are to be adequately supported in integrating IT into their teaching, rather than merely attaching it to their existing curricula

Collection Analysis When the Budget Decreases

This article begins with a discussion of the rationale behind an in-depth analysis of specific areas of a law library collection and a synopsis of selected past efforts and possible reasons for such an analysis. The majority of the article details the exact steps in the analysis process, as performed by the librarians at the William A. Wise Law Library at the University of Colorado Law School. The main purpose of the Wise Library's analysis was to identify materials that could most easily be cancelled if budget cuts warranted such actions. Finally, collection development considerations that may arise when deciding if and when to cut specific materials and alternative strategies that may be employed are discussed.     

The Use of ICT Tools in Mathematics: A Case-control Study of Best Practice in 9th Grade Classrooms

Results are reported from a study in which teachers' views of highly achieving ninth grade classes in Norway (KappAbel national competition winners) were compared with teachers' views of average achievement classes with regard to the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and pedagogical practices. The main purpose of the study was to answer the following questions: What differential role does ICT play in the two kinds of classes as it relates to learning performance in mathematics, and how does the use of ICT relate to teachers' reported views and pedagogical practices? The key findings of the study are the following: First, KappAbel teachers were more likely to have studied math at universities whereas the control teachers were more likely to have studied at colleges. Second, KappAbel teachers were more likely to emphasize reasoning-oriented as compared with instrumental- or rule-oriented teaching of mathematics. Third, KappAbel teachers do perceive weaker general effects of ICT in relation to learning than control teachers; however subject specific ICT tools like spreadsheets are more used for purposes of exploration and research than in control classes. It is the teacher-guided student activity that makes the difference.

Dog Treat Ball: An Activity to Introduce Systems of Differential Equations

Abstract

This paper describes an activity using a dog treat ball to introduce systems of first-order differential equations. Beads are placed in the first of two hemispherical chambers of a food-dispensing dog toy. As the ball is turned, students track the number of beads in the first chamber, the second chamber, and the exterior of the ball. Students develop a working assumption, write a system of differential equations to model the number of beads in each region, and use a spreadsheet to compare their experimental and model results.     

What Do We Expect from Students' Physics Laboratory Experiments?

We want physics specialized high school and college students to think like physicists, and this involves an understanding of the scientific methods of inquiry and the ability to use these methods in their own investigations. In order to do that, students have to be made aware that no experimental result has any physical meaning unless an estimate of the uncertainty or precision is assigned to it. In this paper, we describe two simple experiments in which high school and college students measure physical constants, and make an easy analysis of their experimental data by applying the tools offered by microcomputers.
