Comics and the Modern Library Catalog: New Rules for Breaking the Rules

Scholarly and curricular uses of comics extend to many disciplines in higher education, resulting in increased demand for institutional access to such materials. Despite nearly twenty years of justification in the literature for inclusion of such materials in libraries, there are not widely adopted conventions or models for engaging in the business of a comics collection. At San Diego State University, this presented an opportunity to pioneer new modes of access, from cataloging and organization to storage and retrieval. This article explores the process of making a collection of floppy comics accessible alongside a theoretical discussion of cataloging shortcomings and opportunities.     

Growing up in a tourist destination: developing an environmental sensitivity

Abstract

This paper explores how the socio-cultural milieu of a community may foster a sense of environmental stewardship among children and young people. Ethnographic fieldwork, carried out in a popular tourist destination in Australia, revealed that the overt impacts of tourism activity such as littering provoke negative feelings among children and young people; these perceptions can in turn translate into a sensitivity towards the environment. While debated in some circles, a Significant Life Experiences (SLE) lens is useful in understanding children and young people’s lived experiences of – and sensitivity to - environmental issues in the communities where they are raised. SLE is employed in this article to explore how a sense of stewardship towards the environment is developed among children and young people growing up in a tourist destination. Findings suggest they actively contribute to protecting the environment in a variety of ways from regular beach clean ups and educating visiting tourists to participating in rallies and anti-development protests.

Introduction—Missing in Action: The Case of the Absent Body

This paper reviews selected recruitment resources to physical education based on Lortie's (1975) paradigm of occupational choice and the anticipatory socialization process. Based on data from physical education entry studies (Mulling, 1981; Pooley, 1970; Woodford, 1977; Templin, Note 1), examples of how selected resources both attract and facilitate entrance into the field are presented. Such resources as the interpersonal and service dimensions of teaching, a desire for continued association with sport, time compatibility, job security, eased entrance, and various socializing agents are shown to have some degree of influence on one's decision to enter physical education. Finally, various implications of the data are discussed in relation to the professional preparation process.     

中国陆地生态系统固碳效应——中国科学院战略性先导科技专项“应对气候变化的碳收支认证及相关问题”之生态系统固碳任务群研究进展

气候变化是当前人类生存和发展所面临的共同挑战,受到世界各国人民和政府的高度关注。陆地生态系统固碳被认为是最经济可行和环境友好的减缓大气CO2浓度升高的重要途径之一,因此,如何提高陆地生态系统碳储量及其固碳能力,是近年来全球变化研究的热点领域。2011年,中科院启动了"应对气候变化的碳收支认证及相关问题"的战略性先导科技专项;其中,生态系统固碳任务群在中国森林、灌丛、草地和农田生态系统约16 000个野外样地进行了系统的野外调查,并开展了6大国家重大生态工程固碳效应评估和4个典型区域固碳增汇技术体系和示范的综合研究。在全国尺度上准确评估了森林、灌丛、草地和农田生态系统的固碳现状、速率和潜力,科学评估了中国重大生态工程的固碳效应,并发展了兼顾社会经济和固碳效应需求的区域可持续新模式。此外,生态系统固碳任务群首次在国家尺度构建了科学的、可核查的陆地生态系统碳清查实体数据库,不仅可为中国应对气候变化的国际间谈判提供重要数据,还将在中国生态文明建设中发挥重要作用。     

顶层治理影响重大工程项目绩效的理论模型——基于代理理论和管家理论融合视角

以经济学、社会学、组织行为学等交叉学科理论为基础,尤其从代理理论和管家理论融合视角,提出应构建动态的、激励与约束相容的重大工程顶层治理机制,分析其对重大工程项目绩效的直接效应;引入组织情境与心理状态两个中介变量,讨论组织情境与心理状态对顶层治理机制和重大工程过程绩效的中介效应;在此基础上,提出相关研究假设和理论模型框架.提供重大工程项目绩效治理的新视角,并为重大工程组织行为治理提供理论与方法借鉴.     

Professional Academic Societies: Stewards of the Future

ABSTRACT

Academic disciplines are vulnerable in the 21st century to the forces Barnett called supercomplexity, and we argue that academic societies such as the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education are especially well positioned to prepare 21st century scholars to respond to contemporary changes in the disciplines and in institutions of higher education. Academic societies can respond by helping to train scholars to be stewards of their disciplines, and the means by which disciplines will do so is to focus on the character of the scholar through the development and reinforcement of specific virtues. Following the arguments of Plato, Ernest Boyer, and Alasdair MacIntyre, we argue that the development of stewards can help kinesiology respond to contemporary issues.     

Effects of Fishing Education Programs on Antecedents of Responsible Environmental Behavior

Abstract

The authors surveyed 619 participants in a national fishing education program (Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs) designed for youth in Grades 6-8. The survey of the youth assessed fishing and aquatic stewardship outcomes associated with different levels of program exposure (i.e., no program, programs without fishing, and programs with fishing). Youth who participated in programs that included experience-based fishing were more likely to report several desired fishing and stewardship outcomes. These data support the assumption that such programs are more likely to influence antecedents to environmentally responsible behavior than are programs without experience-based fishing.     

Development and validation of two scales to measure elaboration and behaviors associated with stewardship in children

This investigation examines the development of two scales that measure elaboration and behaviors associated with stewardship in children. The scales were developed using confirmatory factor analysis to investigate their construct validity, reliability, and psychometric properties. Results suggest that a second-order factor model structure provides the best fit. This model produced: (1) a stewardship elaboration scale measuring interest and cognitive engagement in stewardship issues, and (2) a stewardship behavior scale measuring in-park, community, and home behaviors. These scales will be useful for evaluating environmental educational programs focused on environmental and park stewardship. The scales may also help researchers assess whether environmental education results in participants elaborating on persuasive messaging, thereby increasing the likelihood that behavioral intentions leading to behavior change will occur.     

Preparing Preservice Teachers for Life in Schools: The Role of Doctoral Education

ABSTRACT

Physical education teachers face considerable sociopolitical challenges that can impede quality instruction and complicate recruitment into the profession. Physical education teacher education faculty members may not be prepared to address these challenges during their doctoral education. Accordingly, the purpose of the paper was to utilize the lessons learned from occupational socialization research to propose competencies that can be integrated into doctoral education to help future faculty members integrate sociopolitical learning into physical education teacher education. These include: (a) understanding socialization literature and the implications for teacher education, (b) helping doctoral students understand their own prior socialization experiences, (c) recruiting highly qualified preservice teachers, (d) helping preservice teachers question their subjective theories, (e) developing and coordinating field experiences, and (f) preparing preservice teachers for the sociopolitical realities of schools. These competencies align with the proposed addition of a new standard for initial teacher education that addresses sociopolitical learning.
