Evaluating the Impact of Web-scale Discovery Services on Scholarly Content Seeking

Web-scale discovery service is one of the primary trends in academic libraries. In this research, using referral data, we explore the main referring domains of DOIs, and evaluate the impact of web-scale discovery services on scholarly content seeking. The results show that web-scale discovery services play an important role in directing users to scholarly contents. ProQuest is found to be ranked the first among all the major referring domains. In addition, the time series analysis shows a significant growing trend of ProQuest as a referring service from 2011 to 2016. The monthly trends demonstrate seasonal fluctuations and daily periodicity of referral data. Specifically, there are two low ebbs throughout a year, corresponding to the Summer and Winter vacations. The lowest point in a week is found to be on Saturdays, while the peak normally occurs on Mondays or Tuesdays.

The Pacific Resources Room at Hawaii Loa College

Construction of the Boyd MacNaughton Pacific Resources Room in the Library at Hawaii Loa College was completed in December, 1985. Unlike archives and many special collections facilities, the Pacific Resources Room was designed to serve the needs of undergraduate teaching in the liberal arts. The book collection of approximately 3,500 volumes and a small periodicals collection were gathered over a period of twenty years through library purchases and donations from private collectors of Hawaiiana and Pacificiana.     

Scopus: The Continuing Development of an Abstract and Citation Database

An initial discussion of Scopus and its development was published in volume 49, number 3 of The Serials Librarian. This article updates readers on the continuing progress in its development, including the integration of research performance measurement tools, Web and patent references, and other additions that have been made from the fall of 2005 through September 2007. Additionally, this article details the strides made regarding content covered within Scopus, including the addition of seven million archive records in early 2007 and the agreement with ProQuest to link through to its arts and humanities selection through Scopus.

WorldCat,the Other ETD Database: An Exploratory Study

Many librarians perceive ProQuest’s Dissertations and Theses as the key resource for searching dissertations and theses. However, the Online Computer Library Center’s (OCLC’s) WorldCat also provides a means for locating electronic dissertations and theses. This study compared these two databases and found two key observations. First, both databases provided access to a similar number of citations. Second, WorldCat consistently had twice as many citations for which ProQuest had no records. WorldCat provides an important means of locating electronic theses and dissertations.
